I've realized that spicy kimchi is basically the worst food in existence for anyone who suffers from GERD (acid reflux).

I really like kimchi, but I'm considering simply cutting spicy kimchi (so, most varieties) from my diet altogether. I take Prelief tablets, and that helps significantly, but sometimes it means taking up to 4 to prevent a sharp, lingering burn in the throat...

Are Koreans aware of GERD? If so, what's it called here? And how's it viewed in the society? If a young person has reflux symptoms, is it considered strange here?

Instead of getting technical, say kimchi is to spicy for you.

Everyone wins.

People know about it but it's not commonly mentioned. I generally don't tell people that certain foods bother my stomach.

That said, I've never found that kimchi kicks it up. That would suck.

Acid reflux must be quite common here because there's several brands of Ranitidine-based pills in most pharmacies.....

....I know because I use about 10 of those pills a week for my GERD.

If you're using antacids then I suggest you switch to Ranitidine.......antacids are so 20th century!! Wink

In the pharmacy just pat your stomach, say "stomach acid" and "ranitidine please"....they all understand.

I've used a variety of PPI drugs and ranitidine as well. Don't know why, but they're useless for me. At one point I was trying 80mg daily esomeprazole (Nexium). As far as I can tell, the trouble isn't HCl farther down in the stomach, but esophageal reflux of juices from the foods. I could be wrong, but GI doctors I've visited haven't understood any better.

So now I use this product: http://www.akpharma.com/prelief/acid_reduction.html It doesn't prevent acid production in the stomach, but it's also very different from traditional antacid tablets. It works exceptionally well almost regardless of what I eat or drink. It is effective for kimchi, but only in doses high enough that I'd rather just avoid the kimchi altogether.

Okay you've got some unusual version of GERD. Just say you don't like kimchi because it's too salty/spicy/sour/whatever the food you're eating at the time is not. Trying to explain that will make people think you have no stamina for food or something ridiculous.

There are Koreans who have problems with too much spicy food. They usually keep it quiet.

OP, have you been checked for H pylori? Also (this may not matter for you, but seems to have caused lot of my symptoms) do you use a lot of ibuprofen (or other medicines that can bother your stomach, or certain prescriptions)?

Not all GERD is food based, even if certain foods make it worse.

I know this may not help you, but if you look into it, you may discover that your symptoms may not be caused by what you think they are. (According to a lot of very recent research, up to 70% or GERD symptoms are not caused by spicy foods).

Just saying....cause I can eat kimchi, spicy foods, and drink wine again...thank goodness!
