Looking to buy a laptop, and I've seen some really good deals on refurbished ones.
Good idea, or stay away? |

| You can get quite good new laptops for 700,000.........why buy used? That's only adds up to a third of one months salary for even a lowly hagwon teacher. |

Because the depreciation on laptops is considerable. You can sometimes get 50% off the sticker price of a laptop that is only a year old. |

I read an article on a pro-Apple website that claimed refurbished Macs were a good buy.
Make sense, the price of a new one is redonkulous. |

yeah.....I suppose if the laptop is a year or less old it makes sense......I just would never want some 3 year old clunker... |

As a former purchaser of "refurbished" goods, I can tell you they always suck. They're never as good as ones of equivalent age that haven't been refurbished. There's always something wrong. It's just a massive headache and inferior quality.
The reason why they're such "good deals" is because no one wants them! If people were eager to buy refurbished, the prices would be higher. |

| Maybe it's hit and miss, but I got a great 17" HP laptop for $500 ($1200 new) almost three years ago, and I haven't had a single issue with it. |

If you do, don't waste your time getting it fixed. Just buy a new one, the price to fix an HP in Korea will be more than buying a new one. And HP customer service center will not give you a warranty on parts(at least they told me I wouldn't get one). They strongly suggested I buy a new one. A new LCD Adapter and dusting off etc...would've costed 180.000Won, then they told me I needed a new back light at 300.000Won. |

PLEASE just buy a new one. Then give me the old one. I'll replace the parts in Yongsan for about 30,000 won (going price for a used HP adapter).
BTW, if you're out of warranty, then you are not being smart by going to HP. Any other shop will fix it for far less.
If you know a little about what you're doing, you can get a decent computer for around 200,000 won with Windows, etc. That's about what I paid for my 3 year-old HP multimedia computer I run Netflix on with my big-screen. General computer technology hasn't sped-up very much in the past 3 years. The machines have become more efficient for battery use, for example, but speed hasn't increased greatly. And you can always upgrade an older one with a better graphics card, etc. (not usually notebooks, though).
BTW, a new desktop computer (no OS) from Yongsan can be built for 230,000 won. I was just there yesterday buying a new HDD for the notebook I'm typing on now. At that price, you're looking at an Intel Celeron CPU (it was a 3200 or 3400... can't remember), onboard graphics, and a 500gb HDD, but good enough for basic home/office computing needs. You'd need to find a way to ad Windows to that on your own, though. I'm lucky enough that our university has Enterprise versions for us to use for free. |

| I bought a refurbished ASUS netbook off Amazon about 9 months ago. Saved about 50% and it has run like a charm. So long as you get a semi reasonable warranty, I say go for it |

Ditto. Bought a HP 15.6" dv6500 ex display model laptop (us model so no hangul keys, yay) 2008 model from yongsan in early 2010. Full windows 7 ulitmate (pirated.) 550,000 KW, including many accessories and a very nice carry case.
Start up time is still around 20 secs and internet speeds are fast, in fact I haven't had one single problem with it since I bought it and I use it for several hours a day. |
