Also, how many per year?

Just curious.

You may need to learn a bit of Korean, but I usually go here instead of Dave's for such info:

https://www.kss.or.kr/kss_index.aspx

This place has an English site as well and should be easy to work with:

The article and numbers are from 3 years ago, but this will give you an idea how many are in Korea teaching illegally. Illegal teachers are a large part of the equation.

More than 17,000 foreign teachers are working in South Korea

Korea's immigration service estimates that an additional 32,500 foreigners are teaching English illegally without proper visas.

With all the checks and double checks how in the world can there be almost twice as many people teaching illegally as opposed to legally?
Just curious....

Illegal teaching is a big industry. There are plenty of recruiters and hagwons that specialize in it. You'd be a complete fool to do it but many are suckered in by promises of easy money. They tend to get cheated in the end.

Well there are more legal teachers now...but in regards to your question it's quite easy.

You come here on a tourist visa and tell Immigration you're a tourist. Then look for hakwons or companies that don't mind hiring an illegal. Do a visa run every so often to stay off the overstay list.

The downside is that after a while Immigration may catch on and put your name on a list that they will eventually use when they launch one of their periodic crackdowns.

What's "funny" is that Korean Immigration does know how many are teaching illegally so they must know names.

You do know what "estimates" means right?

It's guesswork probably based on those who do multiple visa runs or have no visible means of support.
