I wish I knew that my body would have a very hard time adjusting. I would have brought many more familiar medications with me because while I was hardly ever sick at home I have had one problem after another during my first month here.

During your first year in Korea you will be exposed to many germs, especially if you work with small kids who catch colds all of the time. You'll need to take lots of vitamins which you can find at Costco for lower prices. Also, if you need western cold medicines, go to some of the places in Itaewon. I've seen Fisherman's Friend cough drops in the convenience store across the street from Hamilton Hotel. Also, I've seen Theraflu at many pharmacies, including the pharmacy within the subway station, next to the escalator, at Yongsan Station 3rd floor.

about the prevalence of drinking and image in local culture
also, the size of busan. I seriously thought it was, at best, a quaint, coastal berg to, at worst, a mid-sized city; talk about poor research!

Many foreign teachers don't do any research before taking jobs in South Korea. That's very common. What's frustrating, and even more surprising, is how many newbies just flat out refuse to listen to any advice from those who've been here longer than them. Waygookin who've been here less than a month should at least listen to what others have to say. You may actually learn something important and useful (OMG!).

I'm the resident old timer in most situations. I've been here for over three years and rarely meet people these days who've finished their first contract (if they even finish it).

You're right: they don't listen. I especially find that young Americans seem to think they know everything about everything even when it's obvious that they don't. I actually got sick and tired of trying to help and now I just laugh at their follies.

lol! You couldn't be more right! I used to shout at the top of my lungs about stuff and nobody listens. Why bother? Let'em find out the hard way!
