|
|
this should be an easy guess for anyone who's been here a year or more.
so..first words I hear upon arriving at my office at school.
young female K teacher comes in.
adopt the appropriate 9 year old girl whiny voice
"ohhhhh.... choo ---ahh".
now get used to a growing cacophony of hearing this every day for the next 7 months. |

Ha ha. Perfect weather for a Canadian like me. But my co-workers had to listen to me grip about the heat and keep hinting about the air con when they wouldn't turn it on right away. What I put them through, I guess I can listen to some choo-wah! They will suffer like I did in summer, while I feel perfect. Revenge is a dish best served cold. Literally. Ha ha. |

yup. ideal weather for me too and I'm not Canadian
but I thought it was a bit ridiculous to hear my first (of many many many to come) "choo-ah", when the temperature fell below 80 degrees F.
i think it's in the Korean female genetic code. (you must say choo-ah at least 10x a day from Oct to May)
they're starting early. |

It's too true. My girl classes do this almost every class without fail. I harp on them all the time about just saying "I'm cold" or "It's cold" but I get nowhere. Years of English education and you can't just say it in English! |

I've got this annoying girl who sits behind me at the office and she says "I'm cold" and "I'm hungry" (in Korean) literally every 5 minutes. I've heard her say "choo-ah" 3 times already and I've only just arrived. I think she doesn't even realize she is saying it. |

And all the sneezing, sniffing starts today as well. Sort of acceptable when a small child does it (although I learned to cover my mouth and nose and the use of tissue at a very early age) but much more annoying when adults do that on crowded buses and subways. Usually they have their ears plugged in with earphones so they can't even hear how load their sniffing is. Sometimes I hand out tissues when I can't take it any more. |

It's the national catchphrase from September to April.
Sometimes I think it's for bonding.....
'I feel cold.
Yes, So do I.
Good. We feel the same way!'
I also think it's sometimes just an utterance given without much thought. Often as a way to break a silence. Like the four guys in King of the Hill stand in line drinking beer and saying, 'yep'. |

Only one of the MANY reasons why Koreans are the easiest race to stereotype on the planet. Because, they all do the same thing and think the same way.
They think it is puzzling that westerners are not all alike. So, I am better
able to understand the things Ks do that frustrates visitors.
There are many reasons why the Hermit Kingdom is like this.
Im 100% sure and serious about my claim.and no, it is not racist.
So, back off apologists.
