And so what if he waits till she graduates? At least he would be doing things legally.
Unlike some of his Male Korean co-workers I'm sure. |

I'm not entirely sure what that means, but fair enough...
I probably do need to ease up on certain topics. |

Oh come on...every male teacher, married or not, is flattered and enjoys flirtatious attention from the students.... if you really disliked it, there are plenty of ways to stop it effectively.
Doesn't mean that you're going to do anything to encourage it, or act on it,- heaven forbid.
It all goes to make up a fun day, brightens up a somewhat dreary Korean teaching experience.
Often it amounts to the only sort of appreciation you get at work.. |

If it's innocent and in good fun, it's flattering. I actually try to take advantage of the situation and direct the enthusiasm towards the teacher towards English. I've never had anyhting uncomfortable happen yet though, knock on wood. |

There in lies the odd situation. It's very cute at first. But then you meet an adult Korean woman and things aren't so easy. And then suddenly this cute attraction from teenage Korean girls isn't so cute anymore. It's painful and disturbing. It's like "why do I have ten 17 year olds saying I love you in class and walking you across the street and oohing and awwing over your shoes and, yet, not a single woman of legal, appropriate age is giving you 10% of that attention?"
But always remember your own high school and even university years. Remember the girls that were fascinated by the rather average looking male teacher or professor that seemed so worldly and so full of knowledge. Same effect. |

If i may say so...yeah, you are missing the point.
Gollum never mentioned laughing about this at all. It was his female friend who laughed it off.
. |
Gollum wrote "hahhahaha".
If that is shortform for some other expression of emotion that I'm not aware of, then correct me again.
And, I'm not saying he isn't concerned about or doesn't care about his students. I just said the way in which he phrased the post rang a very odd tone. I'm glad he clarified and established that he is not a shallow *beep* looking to take advantage of his female students. |
Corporal, you are definately missing the point.
It was the female friend who made the joke and was laughing. I just thought it was funny, and laughed too -- especially when this joke is coming from a girl whom I've been dating, and in all honestly, would become quite angry if something like this actually ever happened.
Therein lies the joke.
I would imply that you are a shallow person as you did to me, Corporal, but I do question the depth at which you read posts.

Ryan's Interpretation:
He tells female friend asking for help... female friend makes joke, they laugh at the absurdity of the joke... because simply, that situation wouldn't be an option for him. Then, he further shows the joke by pointing out that now, this situation sucks, but in high school, it would have rocked.
Corp, ease up... you're starting to come off as one of those Tokki/Gord type posters that thinks they are god's gift to Dave's ESL. |
Maybe. But were I forced to choose, I'd rather come across as a tokki/Gord-type poster than a rylees/kiwiboy type poster. |

Of course every male EFL'er digs attention from hot high school girls...
A person of rank here comse acrossas having an axe to grind.
I've seen some wicked looking high school gilrs who've given me a lot of unwarranted attention that I've not known how to react to...
1In Japan, they may be only 18/19 years old but at 15/16 they were already years ahead of me and most of my friends back in 'small town' Canada at that age. |

I have taught in a Hagwan, an elementary school, a university and am now teaching in a girls middle school. In all of those I have had girls say "teacher I love you". The interesting point is I am old enough to be the father of some of these students and even the grandfather of a few.
So ...... when a student says "Teacher I love you" it doesn't have the same meaning as it would in a western country. In most instances it merely means ........ "teacher, I think you are a good / nice person". Take it as a compliment and don't worry about it. |

Nice one - good perspective, I think there's truth here. |

| I get a kick out of some guys over here(& Japan too) that get this attention and before you know it they start believing the press clippings. It DOESN'T mean you're a hunka-hunka burnin' love-it just means that you're a Westerner & unique because of that. Case in point-I get that treatment too & I'm over 40 & battling the middle-aged spread. BTW I'm NOT implying that the OP necessarily belongs in the category I've described. |

It might be time to bring in a Korean teacher for a private chat with the girl. Preferably one who can deal with the situation in a sensitive manner by talking to her about the appropriate time, place and way to express feelings.
The girl is a teenager and will soon find some other outlet for these feelings. In the meantime, treat her respectfully and gently but don't play favorites or encourage her in any way. A delicate balance.
And ignore Corporal. She's always in a bad mood. |
