I didn't see the fight, but well, after reading what most boxing analysts wrote, Ortiz has himself to blame. He was clearly losing the fight despite showing signs of life in the fourth round, and a basic rule in boxing is "protect yourself at all times." Referee Joe Cortez had told the timekeeper "Time in" after which Mayweather punched Ortiz, who tried four times in the fight to hug Mayweather.
I think a true sportsman wouldn't have punched Ortiz like Mayweather did but it seems the fourth-round KO simply hastened the inevitable and despite what you think of him, Mayweather is simply spectacular as a boxer. |
A lot can happen in a fight. If Mayweather felt in control and spectacular, he wouldn't have resorted to his desperate tactics.
If you watch the HBO special 24/7 on Mayweather/Ortiz, you get a better feeling for what type of fighter and person Mayweather is.
To cap that, as mentioned above Mayweather disgraced himself further by hurling expletives at an 80 year old announcer who was simply doing his job.
Again, if Mayweather is that spectacular, its odd that he obviously doesn't feel very secure about it himself. Sorry, not the stuff of champions, and shouldn't have people singing his praises ('tho I suppose they're free to if they're of the same ilk). |
Like I said, Fairweather Fighter isn't a class act, the punch was cheap, and his exchange with Larry Merchant was horrendous. I'm not excusing Mayweather's actions at all and I'd wish he'd just shut up and fight Pac-man if he thinks he's all that. Yet many boxing analysts say Ortiz was naive and inexperienced in trying to apologize and hug his opponent like that.
At least a rematch is forthcoming. |
Okay, dude, fair enough, I actually watched the thing so I'm a bit more emotionally invested in what went on.
Ortiz can be a bit spacey and even hippy (if that could ever make any sense for a boxer), the dude surfs and obviously hasn't been turning down the after session sunset viewing/bong hits. He is idealistic (having clawed his way out of being abandoned by both parents) to a fault, which is incredibly refreshing for me, and therefore was too trusting (and paid the price).
Essentially it was like a flashback to grade 2 in primary school. A kid drops a quarter. He stoops to pick it up. Another kid sees that he is vulnerable, and kicks him over, having a laugh at his expense, along with all his chums (anyone happen to see Mayweather bending over to pick up a hundred dollar bill, shoot him in the ass with a slingshot and I ...won't give you anything, but you'll be a hero).
And Sadguy, it was round 4. |

How much did Ortiz get paid to get knocked out.

Ortiz got $2.5 million for his "fight," and had he really felt robbed, he wouldn't have just gone to his corner after being counted out. He said he had "fun" in the fight instead of crying foul had he really felt violated.
I have to agree with experts who say Ortiz was probably glad that the fight was over considering the beating he would've gotten had the fight continued. |

Technically the punches were valid, also you hafta consider that your cognitive faculties are going to be a little hazy after you've had your clock cleaned. The sentiment in the building was one of disbelief, which then morphed into a chorus of boos from the crowd when Mayweather was interviewed in the ring before he went ballistic on the old man.
In any case, it's a little hard to continue a conversation with someone who didn't even follow the build-up/watch the actual fight, so carry on if you want and agree with all the 'experts', I'm through here. |

Fine, you're through and you don't need to see the whole fight to know what happened. |

| Ortiz deliberately head butted him. He had it coming. If you can't take it, don't dish it out. |

I did watch all the related media hype up and the fight, and I am with Yaya. Ortiz head butted, and Mayweather retaliated legally. You can talk about how classless Floyd is but he didn't break any rules.
That said, I was disappointed the fight ended in such a fashion. I am 100% against a rematch. It was clear as day that Ortiz wasn't even close to Mayweather's level.

You can't seriously be judging a person on how he acts on a TV show. Did you really think that the fight between him and his father and him trying to choke Ortiz at the weigh-ins was real? It's called promoting a fight. |

I'm also thinking a rematch won't happen so easily. Ortiz will have to beat another good fighter before Mayweather's camp will agree to a rematch. Ortiz was clearly outclassed in the fight no matter how hard he tried, and a rematch might prove useless except to give each fighter a payday.
If Mayweather won't fight Pac-man, I'm thinking he tries Amir Khan, Marcos Maidana or Timothy Bradley. I certainly hope he won't fight has-beens like Zab Judah or something, though a fight with Erik Morales might prove interesting given the latter's resurgence. |

| Both Pac and Mayweather have no worthy opponents to fight other than eachother. Maidana and Kahn are good fighters but "good" isn't enough to give Mayweather a remotely difficult fight. I love Morales but he barely won against a up and coming prospect. Mayweather and Pac need to fight and I will not forgive either of them if they retire without doing so. |

Mayweather says he doesn't need to fight Pac man
"all Pacquiao do is beat my leftovers"; "I do 70 million dollars on my own, I don't need Pacquiao"; "Pacquiao got famous on my name"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XK_mr94Mjw&feature=related
"I'm the greatest in history (even better than Ali), stats don't lie" (5:10~6:11)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYiZS6fDEFk
Mayweather Jr. 'promoting' his fight by 'pretending' to argue with his dad

In an interesting development virtually all (if not all) footage of the Ortiz-Mayweather fight has been taken off the net. The so-called experts often have a vested interest in defending their cash cows and boxing's image. Now people aren't able to view the events and come to their own conclusions, but are instead made to rely on the "experts". |

Fighters will use all kinds of strange ways to get out of a contest they're losing. I've seen MMA guys turn around while inside a man's guard and allow themselves to be choked out. Zab Judah got hit just below the navel in his last fight, causing him to quit, and yet he still insists he got hit right in the balls. Some guy who fought one of the Klitschko's recently clearly faked a knee injury very early in the fight to get out of a beat-down.
I believe Ortiz deliberately lowered his hands and looked away because he wanted to be finished off like that. Now he can claim he lost because of a cheap shot. |

A little advice for you- with your mentality, you'd best stay outta the ring.
If anyone's looking for excuses and the easy way out, it's your boy Mayweather. He'll run from Pacquiao, and take cheap shots against unknowns, all day, 'cos that's the way he's built...then he'll claim he's better than Ali... (check the videos above) |

Again, Mayweather displayed poor sportsmanship by hitting Ortiz like he did but just about every boxing analyst says Ortiz saved himself from a major beatdown that would have ensued had he continued with the fight. I don't think Ortiz was trying to lose but considering he didn't howl protests of foul after the fight and said he had "fun" in the fight...
As for Mayweather, yes, he needs to just shut up and sign to fight Pac-man. Pac-man is now saying he'll do any kind of drug testing to get the fight going yet Mayweather has been silent on that. |
