Thank Sadsac...I've been thinking that the contract is unusually restrictive the more I have thought about it. Thanks for your personal account. By the way, what exactly does SDA stand for? I tried to use the search function here at Dave's but it seemed to pick just about any thread Rolling Eyes ....

And more importantly, how are you holding up? It doesn't seem as if you are enjoying it much Sad

SDA's are NOT regarded as Christian by the "mainstream" churchs. They are offically classed as a "cult". Stay far away.

I am trying to imagine the stunned conversations you would have with your boss if you worked at a Christian school in Korea.

Thanks everyone for your opinions and experiences with this kinda thing...

Let me explain why I am still unsure about whether to take this job or not...

My friend and I both want to teach at the same school. This place is basically the ONLY place so far that has even replied to our emails and are willing to pair us together. Also, my friend is not a "native speaker" and I'm black (which I think I mentioned before) so we may be a weird pairing to hire for some people. So we might take the job just so we can be miserable together Laughing

I want to be optimistic about more place being interested in us, but we have a time constraint as well. We are still sending out our resumes and all that but the clock is ticking on this...

If anyone has an suggestion as to a recruiter that might actually deal with us or a school that has hired minority or non native speakers in the past, please pm or post here

Thanks for all your help,
AlyAllen

I wouldn't rush it. Not being a Christian and having a look that many Koreans aren't very tolerant of, you may find yourself without a job a few months after you arrive. I'm not a Christian either and in my search I have eliminated Christian schools all together - I don't want to get there, be expected to follow the Korea's take on Christianity, and then get fired over any little thing because a clause in my contract says I have to be a Christian.

And NOT drinking in Korea? Wow.

I have a Peurto Rican friend who is having a really hard time finding work in Japan or Korea. No one will respond to his applications.

Chirstians in Canada are, generally, really good people.

However, in ASIA Christianity has assumed a very different meaning IMO.

Being Chirstian in China, Taiwan and Korea seems to entail different view points and value systems than in Canada.

Be extremely wary of 'Chrisitan' orgnaizations in any country - especially in Asia.
