You only need to remove the lagfix. The kernel will be overwritten by the new F/W without a problem.

Remember to get Tegrak v25 for VG14 kernel after you upgrade F/W.

Thanks for that. I was going to do that but wanted to play it safe and post here. I already downloaded the v25 kernel so now I'll give it a try.

anyone kbnow what that was? and are they safe to download? or best to ignore?

Having an OTA update with lagfix in place feels like trouble. I think the regular firmware update would only be able to deal with the lagfix by formatting the internal SD card or at least the part where the ROM would be located. More likely you'd get an error message about a file system error and may end up with an unbootable phone. Nothing that ODIN couldn't fix, probably, but I'd rather not do this "on the road" without the necessary hard- and software for an emergency restore.

yeah that's kinda what i thought. i was just curious because they don't seem to have done a firmware update besides 2.3.4 so thought it must be related to something else so maybe was OK. hard to know as i couldn't tell exactly what the OTA update was for.

Got a question about gettting into download mode to root my phone with Odin. When i push Vol down, home, and the power button, it automatically goes into recovery mode. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Any help/advice is appreciated.

It's a different combination for the Korean Galaxy-S now.

IIRC, you need to hold both the "Power" and the "Home" buttons together, when starting up the phone. That should give you the D/L mode icon.

Just updated tonight. Had to uninstall the older version of KIES and reinstall the new version (wouldn't update), but then everything went smoothly.

Any word on the 'improvements' with this update?

NO!

The lagfix uses a file system that will not be recognized by the official, Samsung kernel. In other words, your phone will appear to have run out of disk space (in the best of all cases) and you may end up with a phone that won't boot or permit installation of firmware upgrades or downgrades (worst case).

In the end you may have to take it back to after sales service or do some wizardry with ADB (?) or ODIN.

Unlagfixing (lagunfixing? lagfixunfixing?) takes only 15 minutes.

It is however not mandatory to unroot your phone since no changes to the file system were made.

So to be safe:

(unroot)
unlagfix or lagunfix or whatever
upgrade f/w
push rootable kernel or do whatever you do to root
lagfix
