with all due respect to ttompatz, I'd wager a LOT of money that the E2 teacher ratio is better than 10 to 1 male to female.
I'd make the market around 4 or 5 to 1. |

| In my small city there are more women than men but the number is really close like 140 to 160. I get the impression that in Seoul it is all dudes. |

Males outnumber females by about 10-1.
It varies a bit depending on where they are coming from and visa class (E1 and E2) from at close as 4-1 and as high as 15-1.

And if you don't believe me, then read the immigration stats for yourself You are a big boy and know how to use google.
The stats are publicly posted and public knowledge.
I was just the messenger and not the data compiler.

Ok.
(and again with all due respect)
I DON"T believe you.
and taking your advice the first thing I saw was THIS:
http://www.englishnkorea.com/download/Statistics_n_Homepages.pdf
it's (apparently) far more balanced that I imagined. (though the only reason I went as far as I did was because of how forcefully you supported 10 to 1). In my limited experience, the most I've seen would be 2 or guys for every girl.
apparently in reality, it's closer to 60/40.. which makes SENSE. |

| The recruiter's list from 2009 linked twice in this thread only speaks to E2 visa holders. I was looking for SUBSTANTIATED and not anecdotal numbers for ALL visa classes. Some among you have thrown up numbers you've pulled out of your butts. Some of you have an axe to grind with Ttompatz so you've chosen to grind it in this thread. Wouldja give that a rest already? TTompatz mostly posts information, with a rare interspersion of opinion (considered opinion, I might add). I didn't post the question looking for somebody's opinion based on their single frame of reference. I was looking for the most current statistical breakdown of foreign males and females across ALL visa classes. How many F visas are male? That was rhetorical, okay - please don't pull more numbers out of your butts. Wasn't asking what it looks like in your town or your mind, was looking for most current stats that can be substantiated by immigration or another Korean government agency. Thanks |

well Mr. Lee's monkey, I have NO axe to grind whatsoever with ttompatz and even when i disagree with him, I do so very politely.
if you look above you'll see he was quoting E2 visa numbers, perhaps he got confused.
if you take into account ALL foreigner visas, you'll have to quickly assume, and correctly so I think , that most of the foreigners here are the temporary factory workers. Among them, it's probably 95% male or higher, they're younger single males from SE Asia and India and Pakistan.
It's also fair to assume that under non factory worker, expat "professional" types the males far outnumber the females as well (though not to the degree as with temp foreign laborers). In fact, it's among the E2 teacher visa crowd that the male and female numbers are the most "balanced".
btw. I didn't even notice the other 2 earlier links that are the same link I posted. I actually googled it per ttompatz's suggestion. |

| The original post specifies foreign english teachers. It's counterproductive to post on threads without reading them. |

When it comes to Korea info, I would not bet against the info ttompatz gives as he's usually right.
I don't know what the actual numbers are of male and female teachers that are in Korea but just from going out, it seems about even. In the last 2 years, there definitely seems to be more female teachers around than in the past. |

I would bet against me. I have been known to be wrong on occasion.
I gave combined E1/E2 stats and gave ranges.
He gave the link to the 2009 E2 stats.
Apples + oranges against apples.
I would be interested to see the numbers for 2011 when they come out. The crashed economy in the states HAS screwed the numbers both in terms of gender AND in terms of origin.

ttompatz with all due respect, I'm going to have to bet against you, this time.
hmm.. google tells me E1 applies to people working at Unis.. essentially "professors".
I find it almost impossible mathematically that there would be enough of E1's, even if they were 100% male to turn a 57-43 E2 ratio into an overall 90-10 ratio for E1 and E2 combined. |

ok so I was slightly bored
according to this: http://wiki.galbijim.com/Visas
there were 2800+ e1 visas issued in 2004, vs almost 28K E1's.
FIRST surprise = less e2 visas in 2009.. = 21K
let's assume that E1 visas DOUBLED (highly unlikely but let's play along anyways) and that they are 100 % male.
that would mean 26.6K overall, with 17,671 being male
that would make it 66% male.
so 2 to 1 is absolutely the HIGHEST male/female ratio for teachers in Korea that you are going to get. |

Nope...only for E-1 and E-2's. But many F-2s are eligible to teach English as are many F-4s.
Add those to the mix and that could change the ratio a lot. |
