Does anyone out there know of any good, free newspapers that might be suitable for middle school students?

Ideally, I'm looking for relatively short articles that are written in simple English.

Unfortunately, my school isn't willing to subscribe to newsademic and neither am I. That is the type of thing I'm looking for, though.

Any ideas?

I've found National Geographic for Kids to be better than any of the kids' newspapers I've found. They don't have a ton of stuff that's current, but they have enough archived stuff to last forever. That said, the articles can be a bit difficult for non-native speakers.

Have your students create their own paper!

I've used Scholastic News (hard copy) here and really liked it. They have diff level newspapers with simple articles, vocab, quizzes, word searches, etc.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll check them out.

I think creating their own paper would take too much time (with it being a conversation class). Perhaps they could research stories themselves, though. That way, they'll find things they're interested in and I'll save some time.

Time publishes a series of 'Time for Kids' at all different levels. It's not free, but it's supposed to be pretty cool. Think that you get on-line access to quizzes and the like as well. Third hand info, so my bad if it doesn't stack up. My in-laws use it with their young kids.
