Damn he ugly.

Considering how he'll get zero tail with those looks, while my friends and I eat first, yea I'd say he can do it in a year.

And off of your comment, did you scroll down, apparently he said many of the kids were telling him constantly that he is cute, and does he have a gf?

I call BS on this among other things, and the fact that if you watch any of the vids, his korean is HORRIFIC. i feel for this dude, but i doubt he will be able to pull off korean in a year especially since he is reading a lot of manga/manhwa to try to learn korean too haha

I doubt he'll reach fluency after a year, but I'm positive he'll be better at speaking Korean than 90% of the ESL teachers here. He has the right attitude. He wants to learn and knows it isn't that hard!

I put several hours in every week and meet a language partner at the weekend but after 7 months I know I'm certainly not going to be at conversational level by the end of the year. Good luck to him, but it's a big ask

A lot of kids say this, just to get on your good side or it's just plain aegyo. If he takes them seriously then he has issues.

He should try reading history books, not hefty academic tomes, but ones aimed at regular people.

I have found that the regular and repeated use of the same basic grammatical structures very useful. Plus they tend to be written very plainly so that you are not flummoxed by purple prose or figurative language, also the vocab is interesting and is a good introduction to the type of words used in newspapers.

Whilst it may not be possible to become fluent in a year part time as an ESL teacher he could still develop some pretty impressive receptive skills.

Fluent in a year: highly unlikely.

Reaching advanced level in a year of FULL TIME study and practice: sure that can be done.

I agree. It's not impossible though - I met two guys who were legitimately fluent in a year (one Mongolian and one Chinese). Neither spoke English so they learned out of necessity, but obviously they had some aptitude for language, and Korean is often easier for native speakers of those languages than English.

An American coworker of mine became fluent in Chinese in under two years, with less than a year in the country. He even passed the state exam for reporters/radio hosts (designed for native Chinese) and appeared on TV multiple times while in college, including when his university team won the international Chinese debate championship (against girls from Ewha haha). Whether we care to admit it or not, the biggest obstacle for 95% of us is motivation.
