HAAHAHAHAHAH. Oh no, I wouldn't want that!
I've pulled a runner before. One thing I've learned about Korea, these hagwon owners don't give a damn about you and if you know they're screwing you over, get out asap. Don't be taken advantage of. You're not a prisoner. |
We won't be friends. I have no respect for anyone who does a midnight run. If you can't stick to your word, which you gave by signing the contract, then your credibility is shot. |
Have the apologists ever failed to outdo themselves here?
It's like going to a performance arts show for free at this point. |
I could say the same thing about you and your fellow runners/haters. How can you expect me to respect you when you do not do the right things? Your actions hurt the next teacher in line and that is wrong as well. |

See why we can't be friends, you can't discuss properly for one reason. |

But you are all in favour of that when it comes to dating...I'd have thought you were a fan of inequal playing fields. |

Sure it's equal..in the sense that any chick can either say no to how I want it or can leave if she isn't happy....the ones that stay want to so we equally agree.
No need for them to pull a midnight run on me either...just leave or say "It's over".......ok with me. |

Heck the midnight run is an OPTION. How that option is chosen says something about the type of person/teacher you are.
The morality issue should be left at the door here, its more of a professionalism and responsibility issue in my opinion.
A teacher who runs as a first resort and for less than serious reasons does leave a bag of crap at the feet of his co-workers and does hurt other FTs that follow him or her. Thats irresponsible and unprofessional.
A teacher that tried to solve the issues through other reasonable means, was unsuccessfull or has a pressing issue (say terminal illness in the family) that runs is using the midnight run as a last resort...no problem there.
Still, for the majority of people, quitting and using the Labor Board would be the thing to do if you care about other FTs as this can actually help improve things in general terms.
Its not a good person vs bad person thing either and reducing it to that is just being simplistic or trying to inflame the topic. |

Hey there...
Ok so I have posted some topics up of late asking for advice on hagwon issues...
Having had money withheld from our wages, persistent cockroaches in our apartment and other undesirable circumstances, myself and my friend have decided we want to leave.
We have considered telling them we are leaving as soon as we are paid, but are worried they will try to take money off us for this. They have already kept half our first months wages. We have also considered doing a midnight run, yet I am a bit wary about doing this, not to mention feeling a bit guilty about it.
Is it true you can be detained at immigration for doing this?
Or should we just give them a weeks notice or so and hope for the best??
any help will be appreciated. |
I think you talked about your hagwon having your degree, too? Contact your university and tell them your degree is lost. Get it replaced just in case.
I helped someone do a midnight run once. Many veterans have done it at least once. I didn't do it, but I did get close to it before. Don't feel guilty at all. Your boss should feel guilty, the Korean officials who let this happen should feel guilty, not you. Just hand in your card and leave. |
