Ex-Bush Official Col. Lawrence Wilkerson: "I am Willing to Testify" If Dick Cheney is Put on Trial
As former Vice President Dick Cheney publishes his long-awaited memoir, we speak to Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former chief of staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell. "This is a book written out of fear, fear that one day someone will 'Pinochet' Dick Cheney," says Wilkerson, alluding to the former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, who was arrested for war crimes. Wilkerson also calls for George W. Bush and Cheney to be held accountable for their crimes in office. "I�d be willing to testify, and I�d be willing to take any punishment I�m due," Wilkerson said. We also speak to Salon.com political and legal blogger Glenn Greenwald about his recent article on Cheney, "The Fruits of Elite Immunity." "Dick Cheney goes around the country profiting off of this sleazy, sensationalistic, self-serving book, basically profiting from his crimes, and at the same time normalizing the idea that these kind of policies�are perfectly legitimate choices to make. And I think that�s the really damaging legacy from all of this," says Greenwald.

| Wilkerson is often a guest on Olbermann and O'Donnell. Whenever he speaks, I get the feeling he is still speaking for Colin Powell. I don't know if it's true or not. |

| I met him last Spring. My friend's dad is working on a Gitmo project and interviewed Wilkerson for a couple hours. Good guy that clearly despises Cheney and views him as about as big a coward as there is. He also thinks Obama lacks moral courage... |

Yawn
We've heard this before. This guy or that guy was going to take Bush/Cheney down. They included a Democractic politician and a former prosecuter.
Not going to happen people...we've thrashed this out before and laid out the reasons why. And even people who usually disagreed with me agreed with me that Bush is not going to face prosecution. And neither is Cheney.
This guy is going to fade into the woodwork just like all the rest. |

Cheney will not face any sort of prosecution. That said, he's insignificant. He has no following or any of significance. Even Republicans will not publicly say they like or support Cheney and I suspect even privately. Cheney will be remembere in a bad light in American history, he has no positive legacy to leave to posterity.
The scary thing about Cheney though is that he believes in his and the administrations actions with religious zealotry. That's what is scary about him. Someone so willing to forego the constitution and do what he thought was the right thing when it was so obviously the wrong thing.
Cheney should be a lesson to all of us NOT to let that type of person and that type of thinking near any reigns of power again. |

Unfortunately, that will now only be more likely as long as he remains unprosecuted which is exactly wy we need people to press for it. You can be sure however that he will NOT be prosecuted if we do not do so. |

I don't disagree with you at all. However, in reality Cheney is just such a politically powerful and well connected person (he counts among his personal friends people like David Rockefeller) that we're about as likely to see the whole establishment crumble and fall apart as we are to see Cheney get brought to trial for his crimes. Kind of like trying to get Al Capone charged for his crimes by taking the case to his good friend the judge... Even if the case could see the light of day, there's a presidential pardon waiting in the wings (you didn't think Obama would let any of his fellow politicians get thrown to the wolves did you?)
But you're right people should still press for it regardless. Even if justice is not served, they need to be called out for their crimes. The louder the better. |
