not only nightlife..
but PEOPLEWATCHING (somewhat tied in to nightlife but extending beyond to daytime as well)
I'm a huge fan of peoplewatching.
the Sincheon and Hongik areas in particular are great in Seoul for this. The throngs of young people walking about (walking about is cool too) give the place a great energy (and did I mention peoplewatching?)
even if completely devoid of eye catching curves, K women are often easy on the eyes and all the younger K women are in Seoul.
the Han riverbank is super cool on a good spring or autumn day.
given a choice of identical jobs, I'd take Seoul to live in (especially around Sincheon) every day and Sunday.
problem is, no job is identical and Seoul jobs often suck more than most. (more demanding for equal or less money) |

nonsense. Subjective opinion. depends what one seeks.
if you want to experience the "joys" of the Korean countryside or farmland, then obviously Seoul isn't for you.
as to larger Korean cities, Seoul has all that (every Korean city is the same) but has much much more than they do not.
in short, Seoul is about options. If you're a city guy like I am, there's nothing like Seoul, with very limited.possible exception of Busan.
funny how despite thinking all that, I've been working and living in Korean Timbuktu for a couple of years but if I could get a similar gig in Seoul, I'd be there b4 you could say "your mama". |

I've lived in and around Seoul and thought I would offer my 2 cents now that I'm no longer near the place.
Seoul is a bit of a mirage. You think it's good for you but really I don't think it is. In the old days in Korea, as several poster here can attest to, there was nothing in the smaller cities outside Seoul - no place to get coffee or decent pizza etc. That's changed now. However, nightlife is still far inferior outside of Seoul.
Also, there's the clique problem. If you are picky about the company you keep, smaller cities can be a real drag on you. You will inevitably be unhappy in your downtime, as you spend time with people you ordinarily never would.
All of the rest is trade-off and can't really be argued. For example, in Seoul it's easier to meet local people, but those local people are often more superficial/temporary/transient as 'friends'.
If you have a bit of luck, a small city can be better. In Seoul, you can make your own luck to an extent, but you'll still be in Seoul, and it can grate on you.
I think you want to either be in Seoul or as far from it as possible to avoid the temptation of an unsustainable kind of satellite social life.
That being said, I really liked Incheon in some ways. It's kind of hidden in the shadow of Seoul but has lots of good things going for it. |

I live in Seoul.
The first year I thought it was cool. After that, I realized how boring it is (Korean people are) compared to other places I've lived in (ie NYC, Tokyo).
There isn't really any good people watching in Seoul. Have you even been to Central Park or Union Square and seen the wackos there? Or how about Yoyogi Park (Harajuku) or Shibuya? Where the hell is there interesting locals in Seoul? Hongdae with every girl looking exactly the same with the same miniskirts and all the guys wearing the same polo? LMFAO.
I'm going to keep it real, the longer I'm here the more boring I find Seoul to be than where I used to live.
Been to Daejon and Daegu also which were enough after one visit.
I will say that Busan was awesome when I visited. Saw salsa dancing and a rave on the beach.... people were much more friendly and outgoing and willing to get away from their clique that "Seoulites" are so notorious for.... the Westerners were also smiling and nodding to me (never happens in Seoul)... my friend and I both agreed it was much more lively. Locals all told me how they don't like Seoul because everyone is just so busy caught up in their own thing (true).
Seoul is good for a year... but I'd slap an overrated label on this place if I were rating Asian cities. Wish I had more to say about Busan though, which was awesome. |

| I live in Seoul. It's the way to go, trust me. I've been to pretty much every Korean city of consequence, and none compare, except maybe busan. Seoul has a ton of mountains and greenspace. If you want to live like a "real Korean," then live in Seoul. Theres a reason that half the country lives in Seoul metro. The expat scene in other towns is more close knit, but it also borders on ridiculous. I was just in incheon, a major city itself, and went to one of the more famous expat bars, and I felt like I was walking in on a a high school party. EVERYONE knew EVERYONE. It was horrible. |

Don't listen to these people. Seoul is the only city in Korea worth living in.
Why?
#1 It's the only city you can make a crap load of cash teaching privates relatively easily
#2 It's the only city with a bumping night life
The rest of Korea is dreadful.
edit: and if you are strict vegetarian you are gonna have to eat at home most of the time....this really restricts your fun factor in korea as a lot of socializing is centered around eating meat and drinking. |
yes, lets encourage illegal activity in a foreign country. OP, don't listen to this moron.
and if you're coming specifically for the night-life, then do us all a favour and find some other country. we have enough useless teachers who don't take this job serious, and who treat it as a "working vacation".

Actually I think freelance work is only illegal on Dave's. Everywhere I have been and EVERYBODY I know thinks it is the status quo.
As far as coming over here to party? Cool. I think it is the stodgy, grumpy, holier-than-thou hive drones that give us a bad name. If this country needs anything, it is for people to show them how to party! |

I like Seoul, have/had great times there. Each person has to satisfy their own personal tastes. However, some posters seem to see Seoul has this one size fits all place to live and work for every teacher thinking of coming to Korea. Its not only false and misleading but does a complete disservice to the rest of Korea and to those who need quality advice. Some of the things on this thread are flat out lies (international foods, clubs and privates outside of Seoul).
Its said by people who have absolutely no clue and either never or rarely traveled to any other part of Korea or when they have left Seoul are so biased they refuse to admit there are great places outside of Seoul. FDNY who keeps posting the Cohiba's Rule thingy has gotten so old its pathetic.
As I've said I've great times in Seoul but have personally had the best times in Korea in other cities. I'm a born and raised city kid so Seoul's size is not an issue. Many (not all) are people who needs Itaewon or Hongdae as a western security blanket and there are some who lived in smaller places in America who try and get urbane sophistication by saying they live in Seoul but too scared to live in NYC back in America. They are going back to Podunk, Iowa when they leave and won't set foot in any large American city to live.
To the OP, first and foremost find the right job. It doesn't matter where you live and how great your social life is if the job sucks. Find out what you want. If you want to party, you can party in different places. If you think clubbing in Seoul is gonna be much better than clubbing in America you're in for a surprise. Girls aren't gonna be that much easier to get and furthermore the reverse of the Cohiba Rule is that the bigger the city, the less friendly your fellow teachers when you see them. You are much, much more going to find people more welcoming in smaller locales than you will in Hongdae and Itaewon. As far as this international restaurant thingy, NO ONE in Seoul eats there each week. Its a once in a while thing like it is anywhere else. No on in NYC or LA eats at ethnic restaurants every week, neither do people in Seoul. I've been to more museums and sites in Seoul than Seoul based teachers I know. |
I've had some great times outside of Seoul too, and even lived as far away as Suwon, but I'd rather live in Seoul and visit outside the city.
My experience with Itaewon is that there are a lot of foreigners eager for a fight, but Hongdae is the best place in the country to interact with Koreans. What you will miss being outside Seoul is the opportunity to have an active role in culture, at least on a weekly basis.
That Cohiba's Rule specifically states that it's only for certain criteria. I'm sure every small town in Gyeongbuk has a Jester's and a decent enough taco restaurant now. |

either you're lying, or being sarcastic. no one i have met here in several years considers illegal private tutoring to be the "status quo". were they to say that, they'd be exposed for the idiots that they are. |

ive been here for 10 years. lived in gangnam for 2. i left and went to daegu and busan, because after travelling korea for 10 years, i see the same people doing the same things, the same look of boredom and uninspired-ness(?) in bars and coffeeshops. yes, seoul has more, and is busy becuase theres more people, but i dont think my quality of life was better.
all of our opinions depend on who saying what really? i mean, i have met alot of canadians from small towns, who be impressed with seoul. Ive never met anyone who really liked Seoul over Tokyo though. hmmm |

There are only two things that would ever make me consider living in Seoul: The Seoul Cinematheque and The Korea Film Archive. Everything else can be done on the weekends. Traffic is light going in on Saturday morning and not bad leaving on Sunday evening...most people are going in the opposite direction (at least from where I've ever been living). There are, however, a lot of movies that I've missed, and am missing right now (Ozu films at the Cinematheque). Of course, nobody seems to care about such things so it's probably not an issue...
For anybody that does... see you on Saturday. |
