Nah man, renaissance guitar is beautiful. Interesting to do it on a uke, somewhat similar to the vihuela?

Although the vihuela has gut strings and really rings out.

I'd say the uke is more like a baroque guitar. I play some baroque, too, and it gives a kind of plunky sound that seems sort of authentic. Check out the Flea ukulele and you'll see even the shape of the thing has an ancient kind of feel to it... it's also virtually indestructible and obviously very portable so great for the wandering ways of an itinerant English teacher.

Sounds cool. Although if I had one I'd have to make it just intonation as I'm just kinky like that.
