Thanks, dad.

Korean isn't a race. Otherwise your point is very valid. |

Wrong is still Wrong. You cannot justify doing something wrong just because people in every country throughout the world do things wrong. Just keep it on an individual level and not blame all people of a country. Mr. Shin did this...is correct. Koreans do this...wrong. You keep that simple pattern and you can gripe all you want. |
Exactly right. In my posting, I clearly identified that it was Mr. Shin's comments, not those of all Koreans, that I was addressing. calendar's posts regarding it, along with his other posts in this thread, to be blunt, are the products of a mind that does not seem all that sane. |

You say that because you won't admit that you went over the top and were more wrong than the author of the article. Your over-reaction to a non-important article actually demonstrates that you have a deep problem. Your tirade on 'illegal act' was just not true as were many of our other points. Plus you distorted his intent to fit your over-reaction. You can't defend what you did because you were wrong. |

As a P.S.--A poster made the claim that 'Shin's article affects our lives' well that isn't even close as the posters on Dave's affect the FT life far more and a lot more frequently. Or has everyone forgotten about the CRC fiasco, the deskwarming debacle and other changes made by posters here.
Why should Cali be allowed to continue the tradition? |

To me it sounds like he is describing 90% of Korea's male population...or are all those passed out Koreans just tired, those soju bottles/cigarette butts on the sidewalk decorations, and those red light districts a tourist attraction?
In Korea what color are pots and kettles? |

Itried to go through Cali's letter once again to be fair but I could only stomach about 4 paragraphsas it was filled with bad leaps to conclusions, faulty assumptions and distortions of Mr. Shin's article
He makes an issue of Mr. SHin mentionig the age/marital status and says it has nothing to do with teaching ability, but Mr. Shin was not saying that they did, he was giving the details of the situation so people have better idea of the sample he was using.
Another point Cali makes is that he attacks Mr. Shin for only using 5 peole for his theory. How many people here who post about Korea say--'I asked my girlfriend/wife...' or 'I asked my co-teacher...' then leap to their own conclusions painting 50,000,000 people with a brush filled from 1 or 2 opinion samples?
So he is very off base with that as well. He should read some of the scientists I have who use 1 fossil to build a whole species, their dietary habits, their mating habits, their longevity, their existence in history and on it goes.
Mr. Shin is not doing that badly and should not be raked over the coals for his sample. He does a lot better than western scientists. T
here was nothing in Mr. Shin's article that was illegal and Cali jumped the gun and could lose his job for libeling and falsely accusing Mr. Shin. I highly doubt Cali would like such letters written about his postings sent to his superiors and he should think twice before writing these awful pieces. |

He does a lot better than western scientists? Oh really?
English is the international language of science.
Check out the Top 10 most influential scientists:

All from your cesspool of "western" science.
And while this Mr. Shin doesn't go out and directly say things like, "You need to get married" in the article, that is the obvious reason he is broaching the subject out of context. |

Do you know what the word 'context' means? Please look it up and try to understand what I was alluding to in my post. I know that North Americans do not know what an 'example' is, now I see that they do not know anything about context. |

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this article is "That Colin Powell speaks so well" It's one of those articles where the person is trying not to be racist and in a weird sense trying to be kind and complimentary, but anyone who is of the group being discussed will be turned off and offended thanks to the generalizations and condescending tone.
I can't say I blame people for being a little erked.
It's like writing an article about Koreans in the States and saying things like
"Now unlike the others, occasionally he'd barbecue hamburgers on his grill instead of the others who put on what looks like beef, but I think was dog".
"Oh and he could speak English so well. I saw him reading Time magazine. Unlike the others who would read their Korean paper"
Yeah, you see how the person thinks they are being nice, but is really just being a tool. |

They are some fairly back-handed compliments.
I wouldn't go so far as to write a letter, but--yes--the article rubbed me the wrong way, and I happen to do those things that he praises. |

Wasn't CentralCali the one who got all outraged about a foreigner being prosecuted for assaulting a Korean cab driver? He kept starting multiple threads about the issue. Now this. I think were starting to see a pattern.... |

Frankly, I would like to say two things: one, can you avoid the ad-hominem attacks and words such as "a**-clown". People will definitely get tossed for the latter. Keep it clean, folks.
Anyway, this article is really a piece of work. You don't need to speak the L1 of the learners who need to acquire the L2, which is the L1 of the native speaker. People who haven't studied SLA (Second Language Acquisition) and are amateurs make such comments, and, since his article is hard to decipher, he should find an English teacher and stop trying to write articles. |
