Persistence pays off in the end. Keep trying.
If you are that desperate to get any job, I'm sure you can get a hagwon gig
sooner or later.
The question then will be, was it worth the wait?
Who knows? Hagwans range from some good to a lot less than perfect to a very lot absolutely horrible.
But if you can tough it out, you will end up with some experience.
There are other job boards to check besides Dave's.
Work'n Play, SeriousTeachers, pusanweb, just to name a few.
Do a google search for Korea EFL jobs and you should come up with a lot more. |

A brilliant and practically helpful post, thank you. I'll have a gander at all those links.
I'm deeply concerned about a Hagwon position for an obvious reason - if I suddenly get sacked, or my pay is unfairly delayed / withheld, I don't have the financial resources to fall back on to support myself whilst trying to get home. I can afford a month of living, if that, but I certainly can't afford two months, or a month and an extra flight home! |

I received a email from Footprint about these new regulations. They also mentioned that Busan MOE might want to interview people in addition to their EPIK interview. Yikes!!!
Either they are really tightening up OR there are very few positions around and they want to cut down the number of applications. |

Wow, I am wondering as barely a Level 2 if it worth me applying considering how tough it will be this year. |

They want people to have certification but they don't want people who have too much experience/certifications. I think you should definitely apply.
I was reading old posts from last year and people who had years of experience and school recommendations didn't even get an INTERVIEW with Epik. Simply because public schools don't want to pay $$$ for experienced teachers (whether or not they admit it). |

If it isn't, please provide the name of the group, or better yet the site, which oversees SMOE and EPIK. If one group makes decisions for both SMOE and EPIK, then it is quite possible it is a new policy for Korea.
However, what I am seeing is Korvia, and now Footprints stating stricter guidelines. Footprints already has a history of making their own requirements.
Where does it state it is an EPIK policy and not something the recruiters are pushing? Where is that link? |

This is why korea is no longer worth it.
You might spend 6 months getting all your documents and finding a job, only to fly all the way over here to tiny rat-infested appartment and a boss who "delays" paying you every month. |

The recession isn't going to end anytime soon. In some parts of the UK the recession will continue much longer as they were propped up by public sector jobs that will never return. |

Frankly, if I were a noob right now, I'm not sure I'd be bothering with Korea. I'd be applying for JET or applying for jobs in China. JET is competitive but if you are the right fit, way better off starting there. China also has good options for new grads with no experience.
If it has to be Korea, like others have said, do a hagwon for a year. Their salary is better for a new grad anyway than a starting EPIK salary.
But seriously, Korea is not the only country in the world hiring English teachers. There's always a place to start out. Just have to look. |
