I know that many hagwons prefer Caucasian teachers & as an Asian American, I'm having trouble getting interviews/responses to my applications.
Any advice? Or should I just give up? |

Keep trying, change countries or stay home.
Pick one.
The task is not easy. The job market is getting tighter (the funding cuts for NET positions in Gyeonggi province didn't help). This is doubly so with the US economy in the toilet and the thousands of economic refugees trying to escape to Asia as an option but if you stay with it you will get over here eventually.

are you with epik or at a hagwon? do you know about other countries such as taiwan or japan?
also, do you know if hagwons/recruiters prefer you have the cbc in your hands before they contact you? or it doesn't really matter?

| Most recruiters won't bother with you if you don't have all your documents in hand. If you don't, that's probably why you're getting cold shouldered. As far as recruiters go, I know that Star Teachers is more than willing to work with non-caucasians, so you would do well to contact them once you have all your documents. |

Job market is really saturated right now, so timing wise it is harder for you as well. I had trouble getting recruiters contacting me back as well. |

I do consulting work for 2 provincial offices of education. I no longer work for a hagwan (haven't for many years) although I do have lots of contacts with people (teachers and admin) in hagwans.
I can't give specifics about Japan (haven't been there other than as a tourist in close to a decade).
I have some current information about Taiwan and Thailand.
As to having your documents in hand, if you don't have them you can pretty much expect to be ignored by recruiters since it will take from 2 weeks to 6 months (US applicants or applicants who are not in their home country) to get them in hand and be ready to go.

My school likes to employ Asian Americans, so don't give up. I know there are schools that prefer A-As and others that avoid them. Don't dispair. Get your documents ready and then be prepared to wait. |

Anywho, my friend said that gyeonggi-do and chungnam are good areas as they don't mind hiring us, but you should decide if you have any qualms with living in a more rural area. Chungnam's availability is fairly rural but don't give up unless you're unwilling to aggressively apply and then wait for a period of time. |

Exactly. It's not their "preference". They have been led to believe that only white people can speak English. They are discriminating. Even though a lot of it is ignorance it's still not right. It's even worse when the Asian person has been born and raised in the English speaking country and not accepted because of their looks. This isn't modeling so what's the real reason of rejection? |

It's more to do with their customers than the managers themselves.
They know students will pay more to be in a class with whitey and
parents will pay more to have their kids giving whitey the ddong chimm.
Call it what you like.
They also will pay more for a cute blonde, blue-eyed Californian than a
stodgy, middle-aged, semi-balding, pot-bellied teacher. |
