Frankly, if I were a noob right now, I'm not sure I'd be bothering with Korea. I'd be applying for JET or applying for jobs in China. JET is competitive but if you are the right fit, way better off starting there. China also has good options for new grads with no experience.
If it has to be Korea, like others have said, do a hagwon for a year. Their salary is better for a new grad anyway than a starting EPIK salary.
But seriously, Korea is not the only country in the world hiring English teachers. There's always a place to start out. Just have to look. |
JET is super competitive, I know a good few people who have applied and been unsuccessful.
As for hagwons, well if you want to take a chance thats fine. I personally wouldn't want to move all that way for unreliable job. The recession isn't that bad, surely a job in ASDA is better than moving half-way around the world for a job that won't even pay you. |

A recruiter told me for spring 2012 applicant EPIK requires you to submit a lesson plan if you're planning to teach in Busan.
All other location you don't need to. |

If you are that desperate to get any job, I'm sure you can get a hagwon gig sooner or later.
The question then will be, was it worth the wait? |
This is why korea is no longer worth it.
You might spend 6 months getting all your documents and finding a job, only to fly all the way over here to tiny rat-infested appartment and a boss who "delays" paying you every month. |
I'm leaning towards a "+1" for this post
I now have to do another FBI check because the one I have now will expire in January. I initially was trying to do a visa transfer from within Korea last summer, but the CBC wasn't ready in time and had bigger problems getting my degree apostilled.
If I get in this spring, great. But whether I do or not, this is the last time I'm applying to work in Korea. |

Why do you have to do this?
I don't even have an FBI check. Just the apostilled CBC from my state that I supplied in summer of 2010. |

I have been trying to chase up my previous boss for about 5 weeks to convince them to write a reference letter for me. Last week I found out that she has passed it on to another manager to write but now I have discovered today that she is off on holiday for 2 weeks now. I've already have my 1st reference from a uni tutor which is fine but I don't know what to do now.
Any suggestions? I know the reference letter takes a bit of time to do and not many are willing to bother doing it for someone. |

do you have a prof from university that you could ask at all? sometimes they'll just do it. my prof had it done and sent off in a day. did you apply yet? i don't think you can get an interview without 2 letters. i hope you figure it out! i think you should go back to that boss and say 'look here, you're doing this for me.' ha! |

No I haven't applied yet. The boss in question won't be back from holiday until 17th October. They are a pretty busy office, she is a tad on the slow side and I was only a temp worker. However, I believe that the employment reference has to be from your current or most recent employer. I have a feeling by the time I get anything out of the employers the closing date will have passed. I have already go a letter from a professor at my uni. |

they say they won't accept a letter of recommendation that is older than two years... so maybe if you worked somewhere before that a couple of years ago, you could use that!
i got a letter from my boss too, but he doesn't have a real/fancy template. hope they aren't too picky! |

I have worked in alot of public sector jobs and they are loathed to actually write references. Most requested get sent of to the HR department who just confirm dates etc. I've done a fair bit of temp/agency work so I can't think of any boss that would know me well enough or be kind enough to write a reference. |

I basically suggested to an old employer that i email him a referees statement that he can print on letter head and sign for me. I wrote my own reference making sure to hit the right points and voila.
I didnt even have to lie or massage the truth, if nothing else i didn't want to risk him getting a call from EPIK and not being able to remember what i wrote, if he gets asked to verify it he'll be able to say what i did without it contradicting anything. If you think its worth suggesting then i'd defo give it a try. It takes the sting out of the task for your referee... |

But that's cheating!!!
Sounds like a good idea, but said boss is off on her holidays for a couple of weeks so I can't even get her agreement to fake reference letter yet. So annoying. |

Its not cheating as such, at the end of the day i stayed within the realms of the truth and my manager must have been happy with what i wrote to sign his name to it. Thats my way of looking at it and i'm sticking to it.
I wouldn't condone writing a fake reference, using a fake referee or lying, anything else that speeds up the process is fair game imo... |

I was just joking and considering how lazy some employers are when it comes to writing references I consider it fair game. That said I don't think my previous employer would be wiling to do that, if they ever get around to responding to e-mails in the first place.
I just wish I hadn't wasted time/money on the rest of the application since I can't get the 2nd reference. |

I'll give you my old bosses email address, just send him a bit about yourself and consider it done... |

Pity its probably about 2,000000000000000000000 miles from where I live.
Hahaha. But I'm now I guess going to have to think about other options. |
