After dealing with my hagwon's BS about a number of things I have tried this past week to do a better job. However, my hagwon just dropped another bomb on me: I'm being forced to move from my officetel into a small, crappy shared apartment farther away from my school. They cu off m Internet 2 weeks early on accident and refuse to turn it back on. Their reasoning for doing this move is they think that the maintenance fees in this building are too high, which is a load of ddong because the teachers pay them. In reality they're just trying to pinch pennies by changing apartments. I'm being moved into an apartment with some new teacher I don't even know. I told them I wanted to stay at my current place, that my bed wouldn't fit in the new place, that they could give me key money and a subsidy, or I could pay the difference between the cost of the new and old places to stay here. None of these options were accepted.
Then, another bomb: I talked to the pension office. They haven't been paying into my pension or medical, just embezzling the ~200k per month to try and help their own financial problems.
I've been doing some soul searching and I'm pretty sure with this last infraction that my job is no longer worth it. I am considering pulling a runner, so I've told my family back in the states to start helping me get my documents ready in case I need to do another visa application process. However, I still want to teach in Korea, but for a school that won't screw me around like this. What should I do about all of my stuff? Weight lifting equipment, my bed, musical equipment, and random other items?
I'm not sure whether or not I could get a LOR, I doubt it, as I've only been here 2.5 months and I would have to pay them for my plane ticket over. That, and they seem incredibly passive aggressive and would probably refuse it if I asked them for it just out of spite.
I apologize if this post is riddled with errors, I had to type it all on my iPhone. Speaking of which, I have a 2 year contract for my phone, what should I do about that? I'm worried that my school will try to screw me over if I leave enough money in the bank to cover a few months of service, and that they might try to find a way to withdraw it all if I leave it there.
I apologize again if this is convoluted, if you have any questions, please ask. I'm just trying to figure out what my options are for getting out of this school and into one that won't mess with me. |

Just leave at your convenience.
Grab a ferry to Japan. Hand in your ARC on the way out.
Return on the next boat. Get your B1 entry stamp (good for 90 days).
Move to a goshiwan in the next town and find a new job.
When you find it, have your employer get your visa confirmation number and do your visa run. LOR not needed. New documents probably not needed either.

What about the airfare payback thing? Should I just ditch them? The thing is, they know my bank account info, so I'm worried they'll find a way to kill my phone and/or Internet.
Also is it a good idea to start interviewing for jobs now, or is it a moot point until I am on a B1? |

| Instead of pulling a runner, because you would be harming the students not just the owners and i do not think it is fair to hurt those you teach especially when they are innocent of what you claim has been done to you, give your notice then do what TTompatz said if they fire you or you get to serve out your notice. |

Without your bank card/book and your password, I don't know how they could access your funds. Change your password just in case. |

If the employer is already stealing from you do NOT follow this advice. They will simply take your last month's salary in addition to any deposits they have taken and the 10-day holdback on your salary.
The kids are your employer's problem, NOT yours.
Start looking at your convenience.
Do your runner when it is convenient to you (preferably the day AFTER you get paid).
As far as the bank account issues, simply go to another bank and open a new account.

True but the kids are the teachers responsibility Tom....to a degree. Pulling a runner will hurt them even if a lot of people on here prefer to sweep that under the carpet as a way of passing the responsibility on.
If the employer is stealing from the teacher, then that teacher CAN run and try to recoup his losses. That will change nothing for the next teacher who shows up however and will leave the kids without their teacher and his co-workers holding his bag of crap.
The pension issue will be a non-starter because the OP would have to make recroactive contributions when his employer does or if he does.
Giving notice and going to the Labor Board can at least force the employer to take notice and could help the other teacher that WILL come later.
Up to the OP and since there are very few consequences to running, this will be a moot point. |

This is too funny. Be a slave because of the children (offspring you never contributed, survive).
When will this "ladies and children first" philosophy end? |

It's really hard to tell if calendar and patrick are just expert trolls or massive apologist dickbags.
Really? The kids?
What responsibility does the Director of this school hold? To treat his employees fairly, provide appropriate compensation and ensure a good environment for English education for his students/clients?
Well, looks like the Director has failed on all fronts. Let's blame the white fuckers instead. |
