i don't know, man. i find a lot of the korea-hating here to be completely unwarranted. i don't actually have a problem with korea's view on japan, simply because i don't care.

but to deny that this homogenous country does not have a sheep mentality favouring anti-japanese sentiment is ludicrous. while it's a little harsh of me to say it, i don't believe it's an "ignorant" thing to say, seeing as how i've been here for a while. i hardly think it's xenophobic, either, if it's true.

It's reciprocated by the Japanese. According to Crunchyroll forums...the below is a poll of countries the Japanese don't like. According to the above forum the first country mentioned is Korea

http://sentaku.org/social/1000006258/

If you'd ever lived in Japan you'd know this isn't really true... Most Japanese don't really care much about Korea. Most peoples' knowledge extends only to superficial things like Korean dramas, K-pop, and Korean BBQ restaurants, all of which have become popular in Japan in the past few years. Similarly, those Japanese who think of Korea in a negative light are mostly just reacting to the anti-Japanese sentiment reported in the media in recent times. The historical conflict going back to pre-WWII barely even registers for most Japanese (they couldn't care less about the colonial past).

Anyway, no doubt there are a fair number of Japanese who don't like Korea much these days, but it's not equivalent to the way so many Koreans dislike Japan on a nationalistic level (since it has been such an integral part of their culture since the end of WWII)...

Beyond that I think relations have been improving, and I don't think it's a really huge issue or anything (and more and more Koreans, especially young ones, are viewing Japan in a positive light over time), but I'm just saying...

Oh I daresay you're right. Most Japanese probably don't. I was just struck by the huge disparity between South Korea and the other countries.
Even North Korea which is the next most disliked nation comes in at under 10%. It's just that whenever this topic comes up it is framed as Korea hating Japan, while the reverse not being true...and I was just pointing out that there's a fair number of Japanese who don't care all that much for South Korea either.

link doesn't work...is it for real?

And even so...is this the official government stance or the stance of the majority of Koreans?

Why should the country be ashamed of a few nationalistic idiots?

Should Britain/American be ashamed every time one of their anti-immigration politicians gets quoted in the news?

Should Canada be ashamed because it has a Marijuana Party?

Try and realize that just because a few Koreans think or do something that does not go for the vast majority.
It's this stupid notion that Koreans conform to some Borg-like uniformity that leads to SOME of them (and other foreign teachers) thinking that SOME foreign teachers just aren't all that swift.

WHOA. that's some hard-core korea-apologising there, buddy.

No. This is something Canada should be proud of.

Most people know exactly how the apologists on this site will respond, so it's no use in being surprised about any of it.

Those individuals at the event that celebrated the devastating natural disaster because of soccer, nationalism and/or historical mistreatment are foolish. The fact that it was written in Japanese means that it was intended towards the Japanese audience. They harmed Korea's international reputation, even if only slightly. They should apologize and learn to be more sensible and restrained. Displaying cruel messages at public stadiums with live international broadcasts shouldn't be tolerated in civilized countries. This goes beyond what is protected by free speech and becomes hate speech.

I don't know the Japanese reaction, but I'm sure if the situation was the other way around, there would be much more noise. How can Koreans expect more apologies and compensations from the historical wrongs that Japan committed when some Koreans continue to show such public disdain towards Japan? It would be tolerable if it was a slogan against comfort women or colonialism, but this was completely inexcusable.

I thought it was soccer "match". "Game" goes better with "soccer"?

Already said much the same back on page one but some people would apparently have that the entire country is to blame and the locals should hang their collective heads in shame.

As much as Koreans are always worried about their beloved economy, this encouraged hatred for Japan should be curtailed. If the Japanese ever catch on in a big way (about many Koreans strong dislike for Japan) and stop watching the dramas, seeing the performances etc. it would have a negative impact on the Korean economy.

Similarly, I think most Mexicans would be surprised if Americans were outraged by the name of the "Gulf of Mexico" too.

Once while working on an archeological excavation, I had a Korean boss. He had a Ph.D from UGA (Georgia). He was the field director.

We were having a barbecue for the crew. A couple of members of the crew had adopted a stray dog which was sort of a mascot around one of the field houses. The boss had acquired a small, flexible, denuded tree branch.

As we were waiting for the chicken to cook, the boss was worrying the dog with the tree branch, which eventually inspired the dog to growl. Chung Ho looked up, smiled and opined; "Puppy no like me!" I replied "Go figure!"

In any event Chung Ho didn't appear "perplexed" as to the cause of the puppy's animosity.

e All Canadian music should be judged by listening to Justin Beiber.

Bananas tossed on rink because a player is black in Canada. Black soccer player in Europe often called monkeys and other names.
Hurling invectives at the other team is usual in sports.

Jeez some idiots unfurled a banner they did not kill any one or make anyone actually watch a stupid soccer match.
