Hi everyone. Heading to Korea soon to start my one year contract in Ulsan. Nerves are starting to kick in to be honest and it's making me think of the things that I will miss (mostly my cat and dog haha). But I realised that this will be the first time in my life away from home at Christmas, which is a total bummer 'cause it's by far the best time of the year for me.
I was just wondering if some of you could post where you like going in Korea for Christmas, what you like doing at Christmas in Korea and what you recommend I should do for Christmas in Korea.
I am fully aware that Christmas day is a Sunday this year which also sucks because it's supposed to be a national holiday!
Anyway, any contributions would be awesome!
Cheers,
Mitch |

If you're American and you expect anything like you might see at home, lower your expectations. |

The supermarkets start selling a few christmas trees, but that's all that happens in Korea. Oh and the Christians go to church. Literally nothing else happens. |

Not American, I'm Scottish. Don't have high hopes for anything coming close to being like Christmas back here at all. Just wondering what other westerners do come Christmas time in Korea. Cheers. |

Don't know about elsewhere but in Seoul there always seem to be lots of events on at Xmas. Xmas turkey lunches in expat pubs and special deals at hotels etc...Never been to any, I'm fortunate enough to be able to go home. |

Well personally I don't give 2 figs about christmas, so I usually just treat it like a normal day off, but I know some foreigners like to do house parties/Christmas dinner get-togethers, so there'll probably be stuff like that near you. |

I hope I don't have to go to school the following day. That would be most un-festive. To be honest, I don't even like Christmas dinner that much but it's still good to get together with friends. It's the only time I ever get homesick for the UK. |

You'll probably find yourself amongst a group of ex-pats when you get here. You'll probably meet them over a few pints in the local ex-pat hangout bar.
During my first Christmas here I went skiing with a group of ex pat friends. Other years I've cooked at home for a small group of friends. Often someone will organise a Christmas dinner for a large group, sometimes at the ex-pat drinking hole.
If you have the cash and the time you could head up to Seoul. They have a massive lights display, an open air ice rink, some Christmas themed markets, and as mentioned before Christmas lunches in a lot of the pubs and hotels.
Don't worry mate, I left Glasgow almost 7 years ago and haven't regretted it for one second. Good luck. |

Christmas time in Korea is my least favorite time of year here. It feels...wrong. Missing the Christmas spirit and all. That being said, meet some friends, exchange some gifts and eat a nice meal with people who you like and it's not the end of the world. Don't over do it at the bar and spend the day at home like I did a few years ago! Totaly depressing |

I'm shelling out big bucks to spend my Christmas (and New Year's) on Boracay. |
