I don't remember the name of the shop (it was a couple years ago) but they have a line of shops that sell sports equipment there and I just went to one that had martial arts stuff on display. If you don't mind using one that's used I'll sell you one of mine (the newer one) for 25,000.

Just wanted to give another shoutout for Jiu Jitsu World at Yeoksam Stn. (green line, one stop over from Gangnam Stn).

Jiu Jitsu World is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy headed by Jang Duk-Young. Master Jang is a John Frankl black belt who has also trained in Brazil under Fabio Gurgel and Marcelo Garcia. If these names convey any meaning to you, you'll know that Master Jang is a legitimate badass. He's also an excellent instructor and genuinely nice guy.

We have a diverse group of members: English teachers, salary men (like me), professional mma fighters, university students (male and female), American military, and a couple of cute elementary school kids. Everyone is friendly and the gym's atmosphere is laid back and fun. The gym has a large matted space, separate change room and showers, and a small workout area with weights and kettle bells.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for those who aren't familiar with it, is an awesome grappling martial art that emphasizes technique and leverage over strength. It's great for self-defense and overall fitness/conditioning. It's also *really* fun.

If you're wondering, "Why would I train a Brazilian MA in Korea?" all I can say is that the BJJ community in Korea is strong and growing fast. More traditional martial arts like Tae Kwon Do or Hapkido are also great, however, you'll likely train with kids half your age. I strongly believe that your instructor and teammates are the most important factor in choosing a gym; more important than the martial art itself.

Classes at Jiu Jitsu World are:
M-F
11am - 12pm
6:30pm - 7:30pm
7:30pm - 8:30pm
9pm - 10pm

Fees are:
Men, unlimited training: 130k won/month
Women, children, unlimited: 100k won/month

hey shinjin, is the bjj gym you go to only gi? and do they give discounts if you sign up for more than one month?

1. Fall, Winter, Spring: all gi
Summer: no gi on Wednesdays and Saturdays (team training at Apgu)
If you want to roll nogi, just take off your gi and ask someone. We have some tough mma guys from Team Posse who'll love you for it.
2. Yes, there are discounts if you prepay 3, 6, or 12 months. I prepaid 1.1 mil for a full year which is a pretty good deal I think. Just don't get injured.

No branches in Busan that I know of. The only pure BJJ gym I'm aware of is Dongcheon Baeksan (Tozi BJJ): http://www.koreabjj.com/. However, I'm sure there are others.

Sorry to ask a question that might have already been answered but I'm wondering if there are any reputable BJJ schools around Beomgye or on line 4.

I've only found places that are close to an hour away and I get off work at 7ish which makes it difficult.

There's a John Frankl affiliate gym by Anyang Stn. which is only a few stops from Beomgye. I know the head instructors personally. Both are directly under Professor Frankl and legit. One is a belt belt, the other will be a black belt soon.

For those of you who are near the Mapo, specifically Hongdae, area interested in the art of pugilism (western boxing) there is a gym that's in close vicinity of the subway station and the main gate of the University.

It's a legit gym that has amateur and professional fighters including a World Amateur champ. When I visited the gym during leave, there were also a few professional fighters from Japan. People who have the skill and interest can enter amateur competitons or even pro if you talk to the coach. But the gym also has people are interested in getting a simple fun workout without the bloody noses and black eyes. There are college girls, middle school kids and middle-aged business men at our gym as well.

Although my trainer can't speak English, there are a few foreigners from Japan and there was a guy from South Africa before I entered the Army. Martial arts can taught through movements and doesn't neccesarily need words. But if you catch me at the gym I'll be glad to give people a few pointers. Unless, you're better than me than I'd like to get some pointers from you.
I'm pretty excited because I'm starting training again today.

There is also a cyworld and naver cafe but both are in Korean. The gym is open 10:00-23:00 on weekdays and 10:00-18:00 on Saturdays. Sundays and holidays are closed.

It's 100,000won per month plus a 30,000 entrance fee. If you sign up for 2 months, it's 180,000 and no entrance fee. For 3months, 250,000 and no entrance fee.

Please let me know of any Muay Thai or Boxing gyms in the Jung-ang / Nampo area of Busan that would welcome someone who is a complete beginner, but will work hard at it. Have done some Hapkido, so have some ma experience.

Be careful what school you go to for kickboxing or any style for that matter.

the school i have stopped going to has some problems. Namely the student who has been there the longest some korean kid in his 20's has issues with his attitude and cockiness. Im sure this is common practice but when he goes sparring with anyone he quickly loses control and the owner of the gym just watches. Case in point, he lost his cool with me and I showed him that i can hold my own.

I dislike schools like that which dont watch over you and instead simply collect money. These schools are a dime a dozen in korea. They want your monthly fee but when it comes to actually teaching you, its mediocre. I think imma focus on Kyokushin Karate as there is discipline in that. Just hope i find a good teacher ^_^
