hi all,
my current passport is just about maxed out with stamps and its gonna expire in a year and a half anyway.
so instead of paying for more pages i'd like to just get my passport renewed which means i'll get a new one and my korean visa which expires next may is will still be in the old, cancelled passport.
someone said i can just carry my old passport with me to show the visa and get stamped in the new one when i want to leave the country. is this true? or do i have to somehow get it physically transferred into my new passport?

It makes things easier if you have your old passport for the authorities or
check-in counter at the airport, but it isn't absolutely necessary. As long as
you still have your ARC, they can run that thru the system to verify your visa
status.
Happened to me. I was leaving for vacation, showed my new passport without the visa stamp which at first stumped the guy at the counter, but I showed him
my ARC, he made a quick phone call (to immigration I assume) and all was good. |

As long as you have your ARC, it won't be a problem in Korea.
I've had a new passport for a year and my visa sticker dates back almost two years, so it's in an old passport. The only problems I've ever had with it are in other countries, namely China, where some customs official on a power trip decided that living in Korea without a Korean visa in my passport constituted some sort of immigration fraud, as did a trail of stamps in my passport that abruptly ended. |

I didn't know that little ARC wielded so much power! I keep it with me at all times. I'll definitely try to bring my old passport with me to make things as easy as possible but to hear you didn't even need the actual visa puts my mind at ease!

I renewed my passport last year in Korea. You have to report your new passport to immigration within 14days of getting it otherwise you may be fined.
They put an ink stamp in my new one just to verify that it had been reported incase questions were asked anywhere! |

what is your nationality? how long did it take to get it back? i want to send mine out on nov. 2 and hope to get it back by christmas time. |

Candyteacher is also right about notifying immigration. For me, I just faxed immi
the first page to them, made sure they got it and that was it.
For U.S. citizens, it's a very easy and smooth process though I can't remember
the exact cost. I wanna say 20,000 won. I was in and out of the embassy in
15 minutes. I got my new passport within 2 weeks by registered mail. I had it
sent to my school to ensure I got it! |

I'm a U.S. citizen. 20,000won? I thought it's $82 just to get additional pages, so I'm assuming a whole new passport would be more. I work during immi office hours so I have to do it completely by mail.
I emailed the Seoul Embassy and they said the process takes 2-4 weeks and it my passport has to be sent to the U.S. because it can't be done here. I'd rather do it in person to make sure I get the old one back, but like I said, I work during their hours  |

Yeah, I also wanted to keep my old passport so I'm guess'n it is better to do it
in person. I'm sure your school can excuse you from work for one day to take
care of a passport renewal. It's an understandable excuse I would think. |
