I tend to think of it as Scholars and Adenturers.

Nothing wrong with scholars, but they do have their place and its usually not in the front line controlling and leading people.

Most successful leaders have an abilty that motivates people and engages them. If a scholar can learn these abilities, then he/she can be more than a dude/lady that shows up to work in their cubicle ..un-noticed.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and David Patreus might disagree with you.

I mean what is this based off of? The kids you knew in High School? The movies?

Out in the real world...

I'm basing this on the same premiss you are basing your assumptions. Are you God that you know everything ?? Who does ?

Joshua Chamberlain? The American Civil War Hero I'm guessing? He was obviously no nerd. Why would you say he was ?

If these foreign students have some social skills, then they could go far, if they cannot/will not speak English, crowd around each other and not be social with the main society (America) then they will disappear into a cubicle...underpaid and unnoticed.

.....Chamberlain studied for three additional years at Bangor Theological Seminary in Bangor, Maine, returned to Bowdoin, and began a career in education as a professor of rhetoric. He eventually went on to teach every subject in the curriculum with the exception of science and mathematics. In 1861 he was appointed Professor of Modern Languages.[4] He was fluent in nine languages other than English: Greek, Latin, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Arabic, Hebrew, and Syriac.

Obviously no nerd?

I presume you have great social skills.

Are you at the top of the paygrade here?

As I said, I ain't basing this off of nothing, I am basing this off my average at best social skilled father who was co-founder and president of a 35 million a year in transactions payroll firm whose clients included the Ann Arbor Public Schools (A school district for a city of 150,000) and a major metro Detroit Hospital. He also served on the Board of Directors at the Historic Michigan Theater (If you wiki 'Theater Organ' the picture for a 'theater organ' you will see is the one he helped restore) and the fact that the Theater still exists is due in no small part to his service. He also is on the boards of two other 200+ membership organizations.

Yes he is a nerd. He is also hard working, trustworthy with money, and makes good decisions.

My grandfather was another less than socially great nerd. He was CEO of Mutual Savings Bank and was responsible for the development of post-war Bay City, Michigan. He and my dad shared many characteristics, though my grandfather was, from what I hear, somewhat ruthless.

Now my uncle had great social skills and was always at the country club smoking cigars and sipping scotch with everyone. He was a disaster on the board of the bank and no one would trust him with a dime. Now he lives in a rented studio on top of someone else's house.

Now folks who base decisions off of what they see in movies or what their perceptions are of high school or such may think that "nerds can't run anything", but for those of us who actually have firsthand experience of such "nerds" in our families know what's real and what's not.

As I said, there are plenty of smooth talkers and people who can work a dinner party.

How many people do you personally know that you would trust with the payroll for an entire public school system? How many of your "great social skills" friends would trust with operating a club that had membership dues in the high hundreds and did things like rent out entire airports?

Yeah, I'm sure I could trust one of your drinking buddies with that job.... Rolling Eyes

Nice. Your people were smart, but nerds ?? I don't think I'd classify them as that.

In fact, what is a nerd ? My definition would include socially stunted. Yours may not. My definition includes not being able to manage the way they dress, let alone a company or social event.

And by the way, I don't drink...bad for workouts Very Happy
