Your doing great. However, as you go further, your body will hang on harder (you've already experienced this) so don't be hard on yourself if your progress isn't everything you've hoped by your birthday. As you have said many times, this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. I'm glad you are keeping us posted, though. I'm sure this is encouraging others who may read but not post as they work on their own weight.

Keep it up! Very Happy Very Happy

As an aside, I gotta say, I'm AMAZED at your food budget. Wow. If I was spending that much, I think I would derail myself, because I think that is a massive food budget. As of others have said, I think you have some wiggle room here to work on your financial goals as well.

This might be stupid of me to ask, but....do you pay into your savings first when you get paid? That was my simple way of doing it when I was still in debt. I knew what I needed to live, got in cash (yes, there are reasons to NOT do that in this country) and sent the rest home, knowing that my credit card from home would work here if I had a real emergency.

END OF WEEK 19 UPDATE: 114.9 kg weight and 118 cm waist

Okay, the plateau is official. I only lost a mere 0.1 kg last week, basically nothing. Over the last three weeks I've lost just under a kilogram. I am eating the same but my body has finally decided to adjust to it.

I would be stressed out of my tree if not for the fact that my co-workers and I are gonna do a weight-losing contest!

The Biggest Loser - Hagwon Edition

A Canadian, an American, a Kiwi, a Korean (maybe two) and I are having a weight loss contest starting this coming Thursday at 1:30 pm when we will meet to weigh in. The entry fee is man won, held by the office manager, constituting the prize to the eventual winner, er, biggest loser. Now, since I am heavier than everyone I am to give them a handicap. Initially 2:1 ratio was proposed but I volunteered to up it to 2.5:1. For every one kilo someone else loses, I have to lose 2.5 kilos. The whole motivation for this was actually pre-wedding plans of one of the foreign teachers who wants to lose a few kilos for the ceremony. Then another co-worker challenged him, I wanted in on the action, hence the contest idea was launched! I am jacked because this is exactly the sort of thing that will motivate me to kick into gear my original plan: start vigorous exercise in the fall. It's about time. Actually, given my plateau, I ought to have two or three weeks ago, but, since I've lost 30 kgs in just over four months I'm not beating myself up over it: I'm still ahead of schedule overall.

At least one co-worker will eat up before the first weigh-in, using whatever he can to maximize the initial number so that the later loss will be greater. I thought about it but have decided to do the opposite! I'm gonna do barbells and hiking the next couple of days, and not eat much early the day of the first weigh in, nor drink as much water as usual, to try and get the lowest possible weigh in to start. After all, my yearlong plan is more important than the contest. I'm at 114.9 kg today but I hope to weigh in on Thursday at 114.0 even or under.

The contest ends in the middle of October. How much will I lose? Do I have a chance to win the contest? Well, I suspect that one of the others might lose 4 kg. That means I have to lose over 10 kg to win. Hell, as long as I'm ballpark I'll be happy. I totally believe that I can lose double digits kilos in under a month. Hell, if I could lose 30 kg by basically just changing what I eat (not how much, I still eat plenty from my menu), then by turning up the exercise from mere walking and dancing to steep Halla hiking and weight lifting ought to see significant results too!

YEARLONG WEIGHT LOSS PLAN:

STAGE 1 FINISHED: Food menu and schedule is locked in; good eating habits set. Two-thirds of my weight loss accomplished.
STAGE 2 TO BEGIN: Strenuous exercise. It is time to sweat! Very Happy (Now that hot summer over)

Wait... how long has he been going at this and he just now got his diet in check and is starting exercising?!?!?

I seem to also remember this was about saving a ton of money too, how'd that pan out? As I recall, he initially said he wasn't saving anything and was spending too much. We all tried to give him advice on cutting costs and saving more and his response was "no, I'm going to keep doing what I've always done and expect different results."

Plus, isn't he in his 30's or 40's? It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I know he has dropped some weight, but I doubt he'll keep it off or lose much more. He doesn't listen to the advice people give him (people like myself that have dropped 30kgs and kept it off for 4 years and is generally considered to be fit as an athlete.)

And these "office weight loss" things only last a month at best. Usually one person decides to stop for whatever reason, then it snowballs from there. It might get down to 1 or 2 people, but one will have a bad week and just give up on it.

Losing weight and getting fit (don't forget the second part when focusing on the first) is very very very very very difficult in the real world. If you want to drop the kind of pounds you're talking about, you're going to need to be in a full environment where that is all you think about day in and day out. A real weight loss camp or fitness camp away from work and distractions. Otherwise, you'll just be one of the millions of other "yo-yo dieters" in the world. Dropping huge numbers and putting them back on. Back and forth for decades at a time.

Not for me. 37 here, and lost over 20 kilograms. It's been about 8 months. The low carb thing works like a charm. Also, exercise made not a whit of difference. All about carbs and getting some sun.

That's absolutely right. You have to be absolutely obsessive about it. It has to be your top priority all the time.

I hope he's not regressing, and/or depressed.

I had a vomiting/nausea episode that lasted 4 days. Lost a lot of weight, but have regained back to 174 pounds now. I can STILL pinch at least two inches around my waist. I have to start working out again, it's been almost a month since I did anything at all. Ugh.

Stilcho - yeah, it's almost impossible to make a difference with only exercise once you get over 28, I'd say. All about diet when you get over the hill like us (I'm 35.) Can still put on muscle, but that extra 7 kilos or so we all seem to gain magically once we hit our thirties, that is one stubborn female dog to shift for sure. If only I didn't like krispy kremes so much I could do the low carb (and if it was easy to get good heavy protien and low carb meals for one eating out in Korea... I mean if you say 'hold the rice' that's like 70% of your meal!)

Not so sure...

over 40 and lost 25kgs through extra exercise...not diet...stopped eating unnecessary calories...but the real lost came through just becoming more active....walked the 10 000 steps a day and lost tons of weight....

Well part 1 sucks, but part 2 is good to hear, keep the faith and hang in there.
