Some countries have harsh penalties, some have lax penalties (in reality). What are some of the things which contribute to these two extremes? For example, anyone in my home state who is convicted of a sex crime must put a sign in his/her yard stating that a sex offender lives there. In other countries, on the other hand, convicted sex offenders are allowed to continue teaching in public schools. What accounts for these different results?

Which state is it that requires a sign in the yard?

I'm pretty sure it's in Florida, though I'm not sure if it's the whole state. They're pretty big on the whole signs thing down there; I know a guy who got a DUI and had to keep his car in his driveway with a giant sticker (or something to that effect) on it saying he was a drunk driver.

I believe it is county by county, with certain south Florida counties having some of the more aggressive policies in the nation.

Let me tell you....I regret it of course....but a few of us played a practical joke on a buddy of ours...and it backfired....we put a sign.....registered sex offender lives here....in his yard!
And talk about backlash!
Our buddy was cool with it....it was a joke...and he got even with us by doing the same thing....anyway...
joke or not...serious or not....a sign like that has no place in society in my opinion.....
gotta know the facts first and most folks just react to the stigma...sex offender....
what if YOU go out drinking/clubbing....see someone who strikes your fancy...they are also drinking.....you did not hook up with this particular person that night...but a few days later you go out clubbing again and so and so is also there...drinking...and this time you go over....introduce yourself...bla bla bla....you both end up hooking up and spend the night together....next morning....cops knock on your door...you are arrested for sexual assult of a minor!!!
You could be 20 and the person you hooked up with looks older! And they were drinking also and were also drinking the first time you saw this person!
Point is....you are now a sex offender....and could have a sign posted in your yard....
your life is now over....you are a sex offender for the rest of your life.
Do you want the sign in your yard??
