Did I insult them? Is it considered an insult to be called an Asian person? You said it, not me...
My take on it is that I was called a foreigner loud enough for me to hear it. The boy wanted me to hear it, and the other boys made it clear that they wanted me to hear their laughter as a response to seeing a foreigner. I believe that by saying "Wa! An Asian person!", they could at least see how stupid their behavior is. If not that, then they can at least understand that I know what they are saying. To me, they were just people until they yelled something at me. |
I enjoy reading some of your posts, but come on, kids wanting you to hear what they say?
You know, I'm a bit bothered. I've had a broken hand for 6 weeks now, and with all the staring and glaring going on, you'd think someone would notice the injured hand and cough up a seat on the bus.
One time in 6 weeks. Thanks, random lady riding the 402.
I mean yeah staring is fun and giggly to harp about, but really, I'd like to be stared at right now. I'd like someone to notice the wrist brace and be like "Wow it's a foreigner" so I can milk it for all it's worth and get myself a seat, but I'm having no such luck.
This one's a tough call for me. And I repeat, cute kids always get a pass in my book.

Your point was well made Zyv. I have no issue with it actually. I am simply commenting on the double standard that exists on here.
Now, in my opinion, some staring is rude, most of it is innocent and not rude. Others react differently. Such is life I suppose. |
Comment away on the BS double standards! I just hope you don't leap into threads headfirst and hamper yourself before you dig in. Get to know 'em and then hammer down. |
Sorry but it not a BS double standard, it is ALIVE and THRIVING in many threads here. You just choose to ignore it and thats fine. Or perhaps I mkiss-understood what you wrote.
Take care out there Zyv and I hope you heal up fast (if you are actually hurt). |

Wow. That wasn't very nice. What does he have to gain in faking a broken hand on an internet forum? I respect a lot of your posts, even if I disagree, but you do this rather often. |

Agreed. I do often wonder why Patrick hasn't been banned for these kinds of comments. Is it because he's an old mod? I can't imagine many other people would get away with so many snide comments like he does. |

| Is anyone here actually saying that staring is not rude? How about pointing? Talking about someone? |
I suspect it's not considered AS rude, within Korean culture.
like slurping hot soup for example.
or burping after a good meal in Japanese culture.
but then, someone has to ask a Korean.
I think the point being made is that it's not as big a deal as so many people make it out to be, and people should use their energy more constructively to care about other things. |
Actually pointing IS rude, very rude in Korean culture.
Steelrails and tum must know this, but they seem to conveniently sidestep such truths out of whatever objective it is they have...
I can see this back and forth going on forever, so I'm outtie like five oh. |
We were discussing staring and I clearly said it was rude regardless. But I was commenting on the double standard that other people have noticed as well. Read first then post. |
Why don't YOU? |
Check the thread title. It is about staring not pointing. Again that is what I was talking about. I never said anything about pointing so kindly leave me out of your comments and misrepresentations next time.
Thank you |

| All of the things I mentioned in my quote are considered rude by most Koreans. That's not to say that ppl don't do it, but if pressed, most will admit that it's not the height of good manners. |

Thanks, I was going to say something but you two beat me to it. I don't think PatrickGHBusan got the point I was trying to make, either.
And yes PatrickGHBusan, my hand really is broken. Are you really <insert "fact" you claim as a truth about yourself here>? |

Calm down now...I meant if he is STILL hurt now. Not questioning if he was hurt or not. My mistake in wording that wrong.
Hope all is well with you anyway Zy.
NYCGal, what I do DO often is express reservations about the "stories" of things that happen at schools. This is simply because a lot of times in the past such stories on here have been proven false or innacurate. I am also always cautious with one-sided, anonmymous stories that paint things one way. I end to reserve judgement based on facts and other substantiating evidence. I also have seen many newbies here swallow stories hook, line and sinker without questionning things. Finally, and I know some people refuse to see this, all too often these stories about bad employers pop up and are just the signal gun for yet another rampage of ranting and bashing on Korea and Koreans.
So in short, I would not believe a school or recruiter who came on here and bashed teachers or a teacher without trying to find out more. Why would I blindly believe the teachers story without applying the same standard?
As for the injury, it was my fault for expressing myself unclearly. I aplogize for that and for any confusion this may have created. I pmed the concerned poster to apologize directly and I hope the broken hand is not too much of a hassle. I worked with a sprained ankle and it sure is an annoyance!
Cheers

Read my last post: I was not clear in how I worded it and apologized.
Now if this BUGS you, heck hit the post report button and report it to the Mods. I will gladly accept whatever they decide to do. If they tell me I was out of line, I will accept it.
As for snide comments, not true but heck, go right ahead and spread that around. |

I wonder how many of the people bothered by the stares coming home from work on the weekdays engage in "look at me" antics/attention grabbing attire at other times in their lives.
"Don't stare at me, oh and I'll be at the flashmob in Insadong on Saturday."
Many people are consistent in their behavior and keep a low profile.
Others I think might be a little bi-polar about the whole attention thing. |

If you have a question for us, send a PM. Comments like this are not needed. We watch the board, check the reports and act accordingly. We do not see anything wrong with Patrick's post.
I was not a moderator when Patrick was, I have never (to my knowledge) met Patrick; therefore he gets no special treatment from me. I have never heard any moderator mention Patrick as being "special." Your assumption holds no water....drop it.

I'm perfectly calm. I'm just stating what many of us see on a regular basis in your posts. Glad everything's settled.
Best,

I crossdress on Sundays.
"DON'T LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEE!!!"
-----
I actually had a weird moment related to staring yesterday. Outside the office having a smoke in the loungey courtyard area, and some dude plops down on the bench right across from me. I'm grumbling to myself about how my view of the ladies passing by has been blocked, and then happen to look up and notice him staring at me. I gave him a funny look, put my hands up, and said "Why are you staring at me?" in a low but relatively mellow voice.
He just smiled and kept staring. He has overcome my elite Jedi mind trick! No!
Maybe he thought I was hot? |
