Quote:
The US ambassador to the Philippines has apologised for saying that 40% of male tourists visit the country for sex.

Ambassador Harry Thomas sent a text message to the Philippine foreign secretary, Albert del Rosario, expressing regret for his comments, which provoked an outcry among officials unhappy at their country being portrayed as a haven for sex tourists.

Only 40%? Come on now.

And he didn't really apologize. He said he was sorry he couldn't prove the 40% figure.

Heres my gripe. As an older male who enjoys travel for its own sake (not a quest for sex) & prefers flying solo, it feels like I get profiled as "that" kind of tourist throughout SE Asia.

It disinclines me to vacation there.

Usually profiling of white slightly older males tend to work in their favour. I would ignore people's prejudice as millions of non-whites do every day in 'our' part of the world, and get on with it.

The fact that he apologized via text message is what stands out most to me.

Me too. Presumably it was a short apology. 'Sry bud' or something along those lines

Fear-mongering by hurling around completely baseless statistics is simply par for the course in this era of the now three-decade-old child sex abuse witch hunt/boogey man/hysteria.

Like recidivism:

Alliance MP. Richard Harris (Prince George-Bulkley Valley) knows
full well that the recidivism of pedophiles is almost 100%, if not 100%.

Because of high recidivism rates, Congress can and must do more to ensure that offenders who could strike again are not roaming our streets.
- Congresswoman Nita Lowey

"Studies have clearly shown that sexual predators have the highest recidivism rates."
- Senator Frank Padavan (R-C, Bellerose)

With the high-rate of recidivism of sex offenders, the state must have the ability to provide additional rehabilitation to those who pose a threat to our communities."
- Senator John J. Flanagan.

Studies show that sex offenders are four times more likely to be rearrested than other criminals.
- Congressman Vito Fossella (R-NY13)

Sex offenders are not petty criminals. They prey on our children like animals, and they will continue to do so unless we stop them. We need to change the way we track these pedophiles.
- Former disgraced Republican Senator Mark Foley, FL - accused of soliciting male minors online and who also spearheaded the Adam Walsh Act.

"We know that the recidivism rate of convicted child molesters is extremely high. When many leave the penitentiary, they continue their ways against our greatest resource, children.
- Ted Poe Representative Texas

There are over 500,000 registered sex offenders across the country, and statistics have shown that the recidivism rate for those criminals is high.
- Representative James F. Sensenbrenner(R) Wisconsin who spearheaded the Adam Walsh act

"Recidivism rates are alarmingly high" for sexual offenders.
- Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D) of North Dakota

Unlike other criminals, sex offenders pose a unique challenge to law enforcement and communities due to high recidivism rates.
- Representative Anthony D. Weiner NY

The reality however differs. Links have been provided so that the studies can be viewed in their entirety. Pay close attention to the number of new sex crimes committed by registered sex offenders. This is quite different from technical violations and failure to register. We think most readers will be shocked at what these studies and statistics reveal.

The notion that most sex offences are committed by strangers, that sex offenders have high rates of recidivism, and that treatment does not work is NOT supported by the extensive and growing body of research regarding registered sex offenders. Here is a glimpse of what these studies reveal, which proves that what is happening is the exact opposite of what the American people are repeatedly being told.

Arizona Reports A 5.5% recidivism rate for a new sex crime. This was a fifteen years study done between 1984 and 1998.

Wyoming Reports Recidivism rates between 2% and 7.5%. Their study covers a five year period between 2000 and 2005.
http://legisweb.state.wy.us/PubResearch/2005/05RM078r.pdf

Minnesota Reports After an eight year follow-up a recidivism rate of 10%. They are careful to note which category of offenders pose the highest risk, those being individuals whose victim was a stranger.
http://www.doc.state.mn.us/documents/04-07SexOffenderReport-Recidivism.pdf

Ohio Reports A recidivism rate of 8% as a result of their 10 year study. Rapists with aldult victims were the highest risk while those convicted of incest ware the lowest risk with a 7.4 recidivism rate.

Another example is the "multi-billion dollar child pornography industry." But exactly which one are they talking about? The $3 billion one

Quote:
"Child pornography is one of the fastest growing online businesses generating approximately $US3 billion ($3.43 billion) each year"

This '$US3 billion' figure has no credibility and even if it was factual as at January 2008...The '$US3 billion' figure has been promulgated far and wide since at least mid 2003, when Utah-based Jerry Ropelato commenced publishing it, without citing a source, on his web site InternetFilterReview.com.

In addition to The Wall Street Journal's "Numbers Guy", Carl Bialik (as referenced earlier herein), at least one other journalist has tried, also without success, to find out the original source of particular 'statistics' Ropelato promotes, after tracing other peoples'/organisations' claims to Ropelato. In November 2005, Seth Lubove reported:

Quote:
"Most of the statistics there have come from literally hundreds of sources, all reputable," Ropelato insists. He says he got the age-11 item from The Drug of the New Millennium, a book about the dangers of porn self-published in 2000 by Mark Kastleman, a self-professed former porn addict in Orem, Utah, who counsels other porn fiends. "I don't remember where I got that from," Kastleman says breezily. "That is a very common statistic." And there the trail goes cold.

or the $20 billion one?

Quote:
"child pornography is a $20 billion industry worldwide"

This out-of-date/discredited $20 billion 'statistic' was given new life in March 2008 when it appeared in Australian media reports as a result of a joint media release between the Australian Federal Police and Microsoft. The statistic was disowned in April 2006 by the organisations to which it had been, and still is being, attributed (i.e. the FBI and Unicef).

In reality, there is no "child porn industry" of any significance. Most is produced for personal or private use, and may be traded non-commercially with others of like mind. Significant amounts of money rarely change hands.

I seem to recall a previously (banned) poster that went on and on about how "love" between a kid and an adult was quite normal.

Why does the above remind me so much of that banned poster I wonder?

I wonder if you can quote anything from that allegedly "(banned) poster" to document what you wrote here although I highly doubt it. How would you know if anyone was banned anyway?

And keep taking threads off-topic and who knows, maybe you'll get banned, too.

There's a post at the top of the forums that shows banned posters. Here's a quick link for ya.

As for similarities between you and said poster, I think it's obvious.

But hey, maybe you're nothing like him.

I didn't think so.

Thanks for disproving yourself since, as anyone can plainly see, "him" is not at that "quick link." You saved me the trouble.

Wasn't "him" banned a long time ago? I'm guessing "him" has possibly returned a few times... each time championing the rights of nasty little pedophiles.

But hey, if you're nothing like "him", good for all. I'd prefer not to see stuff from "him" on this site at all, and was glad to see "him" gone.

Back on topic though, no need to derail this further....

Similar to Korea, has there ever been estimates to how much of the Thai economy is derived from the sex industry? Do any organizations attempt to keep numbers?

Getting back on topic and without wasting any more time on further baseless assertions, I notice that U.S. Ambassador to visit Baguio Public Library. Good to see he is back doing more diplomatic things.
