For 4 years, that might mean like 8,000 RMB. I never stuck it out that far. However, I am sure the airfare is something owed. I guess it makes sense because the school would have owed or paid flights during your time.

Right now, I would simply ask them how much they plan of paying and make a new thread regarding "Leaving Korea after 4 year help". Let us know how much they will give. I am guessing 9,000 or more wouldn't be out of the picture.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but are you talking about pension? Is it the same as severance?

My pension will be over 11million won. I'm not sure about severance, but I will also get a 2.9 million bonus for completing my contract, and 1.5 million for airfare. Very good reasons to stick it out four more months, lol. Back to work tomorrow. *sigh*

Not stupid at all. I am no expert in this. I did 2 years regarding pension and let one hagwon not pay into it. However, I think it will apply exactly the same for you. You go to the pension office and make sure the school paid into it. If the pension office says they didn't, then you either have to contribute half, the school matches it (it's extra income basically) or they need to. Assuming they did, you show your plane ticket out of Korea and they pay you a month later. Give them bank account information in your home county.

Severance is another thing. I was never clear on this, but others told me that after 1 year at the same school, you get more than the usual severance for a 1 contract period. In your case, it is 4 years? If you were paid 2 million won/month, then it would be 8 million won I think. Just multiply it by 4, and this amount you should receive before you leave Korea. The pension office will not help you on this and it will be virtually impossible to collect on if you are back home. Get your severance, but you can leave Korea if the pension office has your home bank info.

That seems low for 4 years. 1 year completed should be 1 month. Let's say you started at 2.0 and got .1 raise each year, then you should get 2.0 + 2.1 + 2.2 + 2.3 = 8.6

That is just for severance. The reason being is that they would have to hire a new teacher each year if it wasn't for your renewing, and they would have to pay the airfare (if it wasn't for you renewing each year).

They saved money my rehiring you (no recruiter costs, no airfare, no severance). You don't have to worry about the pension office if they said the school paid. Worry about the 8.5 severance.

Ahhh, I see. Yes I am registered with the pension office and receive updates on my pension each year, so I will be good to go there.

I was confusing severance with my "yearly bonus". My hagwon just pays my severance each year I renew. So I've been collecting an extra month's pay each year I renewed....and I will get an extra month's pay at the end of my contract. Not sure why they don't just give it to me all at once at the end....but yeah I'm getting severance also then.

Question. Can you get your pension paid into your Korean bank account? I will be coming back to Korea a month after I leave to start graduate school here. I'd much prefer to have my pension paid into my Korean bank account. I asked this question on the pension website but never got an answer.

Yep, and that is easier (no remittance paperwork). Just give them your bank account info in Korea. However, do realize this. The bank you use might stop your online usage if you don't use it for a year (even if you set it up to transfer funds to your home country's bank account).

The job is not that difficult, it's just a combo of the fact that I've been doing it too long

hahahahaha I was trying to find out your feelings about the job itself because that seems to be why the topic shifted directions.

Since it's like I thought and you don't really have any problems with the job, I was going to suggest trying to take some random community class that helps you relax after work. Since you're losing the will to teach and the students can probably tell, you would have new topics to bring up for them.

I haven't been a teacher for 4yrs at one place so I can't list anything much more helpful than that. Either way, good luck!

Maybe you are doing the same things and it has become boring or routine. Your students probably sense you do not care so they will start acting out.

You have accomplished a lot if you survived 4 years here. I just go day to day and started counting the days when I started and only been here 2 months. Now, I have to restart because the Hagwon I am at is laying me off due to money trouble. I found a new position but my contract starts all over and this is depressing. (Even though it is more money and nicer housing)

Care to share what you learn in 4 years. That's a long time.

So this is my last contract with this hagwon....I've been with them almost four years. I am a good teacher and my kids have really enjoyed me.

Now I have just over four months left until I am finished and can take a break and much much needed vacation, but I think now that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel I just feel like giving up and not caring in the classroom.

Things that never used to bother me really frustrate me now. It seems like every day I am getting more and more annoyed by my kids. I'm much more cross and blunt with the students lately, even unfair and rude at times.

I know this is not typical of me....but does anyone have experience being burnt out? Could you offer some advice? I know four months is not an extremely long amount of time, and I know I will survive. I'd just like to finish the contract without feeling like fingernails are screeching down a chalkboard every time a kid speaks above average volume or gets out of their seat, etc etc.
