I wouldn't stick to towns specifically. I'd tell a recruiter you want to be near a subway station, then check out how far it is from the places in Seoul that interest you (and check back with us to see what we think).
Personally, I'd say the sweet spot is in the suburbs southwest of Seoul (Anyang, Gunpo, Gwacheon, Uiwang, Gwangmyeong, in no particular order), but I live there so I'm a bit biased. If you want proximity to Seoul for nightlife and food those cities make it pretty accessible (and Anyang and Gunpo are pretty decent in their own right). |

| I live in the Itaewon area and commute to Anyang. It's not bad at all. I do agree with the people who say that just being "in Seoul" isn't that meaningful. If you have a neighborhood you want to live in, okay, but lots of neighborhoods in Seoul are isolated and pretty crappy. I noticed this when I was looking for my current job. I interviewed at several places in Seoul that were a lot harder to get to from Itaewon than Anyang is. |

| Incheon might also be worth considering. It's a fairly large city (population of around 3 million), and it's linked to Seoul by subway line 1. Parts of Incheon are within 30-40 minutes of the central areas of Seoul. I have known a lot of people that have lived and worked in Incheon, but have done the majority of their socialising in Seoul (Itaewon, Hongdae, and Jongno). |

Look at the subway map and the national train map, too. You could live in Pyeongtaek and be about 45 minutes from Yongsan/Seoul station by Mughungwha/Saemaeul/Nooriro train. Cheonan is an hour by national train, or 30 minutes if you're on the east side by the KTX station. Also, some stations are better than others as they have express subway trains (this is really only for line 1 south/west of Guro or north of Seongbuk). Also, don't discount buses. Every city has a bus terminal, and using a direct bus from the terminal to Nambu/Express/East Terminals in Seoul can be very quick and efficient.
The key is planning. If you know the times of the buses, subways, trains, etc, you can live anywhere in Gyeonggi, the north edge of Chungcheongnam-do, and the east side of Gangwon-do and be into Seoul within the hour. In fact, Chuncheon Gangwon-do is scheduled to start running express commuter trains to Yongsan within 45 minutes by the beginning of 2012, cutting the current time by subway in half.
So, find a job you like, then check out EVERY transportation option - lots of places would fit the bill. |

| I have 3 co-workers that travel from Seoul to Anseong. At least 2 hour trip one way each day. Doesnt seem to bother them! |
