| Going insane, can't find a new job in Seoul, I've been searching for two months. Any advice on things I haven't tried yet? Other than the obvious things. I'm ready to kill someone. |

| Assuming you're a newb: read one of the umpteen threads on why Seoul isn't all that. |

Well here is my diagnosis
First - What? mt? Is that a "not". If the is a not and you are not a newb. Then my question is where have you been? Your membership join date is early this year. You have very few posts mostly a related to buy or selling or traveling. Very few on job related things. This shows to me you are not a person serious about education. Fine neither am I very much, but I keep up to date and try to keep my finger on he pulse of the ESL community here in Korea. I try to be around here a whole bunch to learn things. Ya there are more interesting things then Korea but if I want to succeed I have to keep informed.
Plus your posts are short. Short is fine but short can also show laziness. Are you being lazy?
Ok maybe your post is simple because it is simple cry for relief, but details! How have you been looking? Hitting the streets? Cold calling? Using recruiters? What about the networking man? Or have you been getting offers BUT they are not acceptable to you. Maybe the post should say I can not find a job I like?
A quick browse of your posts one commented on you want Central Seoul and no Kindy. Fine, but with those restrictions you are very limited. Hey I understand the no kindy (me would result in deaths) but can you change you range to or around Seoul or even close bedroom communities like Suwon.
Is there something about you that can be a problem? Fat? Old? Young? Not desired Korean racial preference. Long hair? Earrings? Style of dress? In getting a job you have to play the game.
Are you ready? Do you have all your paperwork. I mean many places will hire you if you can show them - I can start tomorrow and you can send me to Japan this weekend. Or all we need to do is make a trip to immigration. No school wants to here oh by the way can you hold this job for a week while I get my Criminal record check done?
Another post you comment that you want a short contract with a place so when public schools hire, you will leave your job then. What school wants to hire somebody that says "oh by the way I might not been here in a couple of months." This translates to a school of "hey if you hire me, you will have to go with the hiring process all again in a couple of months and you will likely be out some money, too!" Do you make comments like this in interviews or ask for short contracts? For example my brother is coming in January for a visit So if I say to a school "if hired I still want a week off in January" (hagwon busy season). Some schools will see that as just trouble.
Hey I am looking for a job too, but I could right now have one that would be okay. Jobs are still there, my worry is finding one that will not be too crazy or cheat me. I have my choices too. The more I am in a rush the more likely I will get a cruddy job.
That's life - never said it would be easy. |

Seriously? Your post came off a little harsh. Just because he doesn't post on the job boards doesn't mean he doesn't take Education serious... Maybe he just doesn't spend much time discussing other peoples Job problems. Maybe he didn't discover Daves ESL until a few months back? Nothing that you said at all points to the fact that he "isnt serious about education"... |

Yea my post is a bit harsh. As to looking at the join date and a brief glance of of posting history gives me a general picture of who he is. True he could have only discovered Dave's back in March, it happens. Maybe he is just a lurker and once in a while poster. Maybe he is a serious educator. But my impression is he is not serious. I should have added about life in Korea. Ok then, now is the time to get serious. Two months no job, buckle down and ask for help but properly.
As commented right after the OPs, there are many threads on finding jobs and that here on Dave's. Next, he has given little to no detail on what he has done in his search or even what kind of qualifications he has or what he wants. Ask a general question get a general answer - if any answer. Why give advice when a poster gives not much to begin with. People do not want to do his work for him.
Plus I did give some advice. Looking back at his previous posts I came up with some things that maybe are hampering his search. He wants Seoul and especially Central Seoul. Central Seoul is the prime area for most job seekers, unless he has something special like looks or experience or education he is getting beat by the competition. The further out he is willing to go from Central Seoul that more likely he will find a job. Second, he does not want kindy another thing that prevent him from getting a job. A good portion of jobs in Central Seoul are for Kindy teachers.
Well lets hope the OP comes back and gives us some details. Maybe then he can get some help.
(Wow I am in very verbose mood today) |

Education and job should not be capitalized. "He doesn't take education serious" should use an adverb, "seriously". "Peoples" and "Daves" are actually possessive, other people's problems, and Dave's ESL. Contractions like "isnt" use apostrophes.
Six sentences, six mistakes. Talk about not taking education seriously. |

Thank you. My English and grammar have been getting worse. Plus I am in a general rush and did not check myself. I really need to be careful. I did break the unwritten rule of Dave's - spelling and grammar counts. Especially when a person brings up education, experience, or how great they are! Ouch! Brought down by own writing.
I should have said the OP was not serious about working and teaching in Korea. |

We need more info: age, gender, race, qualifications, previous experience, what types of job are you applying for? |

I think I do. Thanks for the big font and red letters. I did take that stuff into account.
Yes he has a join date that is early, but the OP admits he has been here for a while. I am guessing at least one year/contract. Where has he been since the beginning if his join date is less then a year? I will be helpful to newbies and newcomers. If they prove they are worth helping. Generally someone who has a early start date and in their first contract or even first months get breaks. This guy has been here in Korea for a while and when something goes wrong finally asks for help but in a sloppy manner.
You know who I love the most. People that sign up for Dave's before coming to Korea. This shows to me they are serious and really trying to learn and get prepared. What I hate is people who have been in Korea for a time have a problem then join up, get their help, and then go away. It gets tiring to
- tell people to search the site
- ask intelligent questions
- be a bit more proactive
- stepping around hurts feeling
- answering the same question over and over again
- Keep asking for help in the same thread when there question has been answered.
When people get tired they stop coming here. Then the community here suffers and will eventually go away. I see it now with ttompatz. His posts have changed over the years from helpful and detailed to very concise and stern a little. The morons on here have effected the man.
Ok maybe I am sounding a bit hypocritical. I have been lucky I can coast with some of my jobs. I do not spend lots of time learning new techniques for ESL. SO I not always serious. Still when things become important I change my ways and become serious. I will study, research, and work hard when I need too. I will try hard. The OP did not try hard! But even in the slow periods I do try to keep a finger on the pulse. Check on blogs, check out Dave's once or twice a week, read the news. I have learned if I do not do this when things go haywire I will suffer twice as hard. Second the more prepared I am, the less likely things will blow up.
Very likely the OP does have a life. Yes riding bikes and traveling are more interesting then researching in to RCMP checks and try to figure out Korean taxes. But if I do the two latter before they get important the more I can do what I like later or continue. An ant taught me that one.
Lastly I have ranted on this before. Learn to ask questions properly. There is a right way and a wrong way. The wrong way is doing the facebook style of one or two sentences. The right way is to give details, ask for what you want, describe what you have done, thoughts, and above all entertain us.
The OP has not done that. Ok he wants a job in Seoul. I will give him the name of my recruiter - he has a few postings there. But I am gathering that would not be the most helpful and maybe wants more advice. Or maybe he just wanted this
"Ahhhhh that is to bad" You are such a trooper - I am sure things will turn around for you" There. . . there . . . there. |
