I got an offer to start next week working in Shanghai teaching Korean kids.
They pay 2.3mil won eqvt plus housing and airfare. Pretty standard, but a sweet deal for Shangha as it's eqvt of 13k rmb including free housing and airfare and severence etc. All usual Korean contract benefits.
They are called Eduvil
Internet search brings up absolutely nothing. One would think they'd have a website to attract korean student's parents from korea no?
Weird that a company like that wouldn't have a website.
Also the contract is written all in English, not Chinese, so if things went sour, would I have any recourse? Also how is it in China re visas, if it doesn't work out, do you need release letter etc, go on visa runs etc...?
Man I'm distrustful of working for Koreans in their own country where they have to abide by the laws to some degree at least, I'm thinking in another country such as China they could be even worse....
Anyone heard of the school? Eduvil in Shanghai. My contact is a Korean recruiter in Korea.

Really the name is EDUVIL? When I first saw it I saw EduVIL. I would be very careful with this. If you get into troubles you will have to deal with Chinese laws. I do not think the Korean labour board has a office in China.
My advice is is to adjust your searching a bit. First off trying searching Korean search sites like naver.com or nate.com. Hope your Korean is good or babelfish translations are OK. People in the west use google.com - Korea not so much. Thus the same for China. What site is popular for China for I do not know. Also try finding ESL and discussion sites for people in China. Dave's I think is mostly for people in Korea.

The big Chinese search engine is http://www.baidu.com/.
No idea about the school but I have heard the regular horror stories from people in China working for Koreans; best to find out as much as you can.
As for visas, who knows! It's always changing in China, for up-to-date information there are a slew of Shanghai forums on the Internet, so maybe do searches for those. |

Well, not when I was in Nanjing, but I heard about schools not paying on time, not providing proper visas, cheating on tax etc when I was in Suzhou. Never had a problem though myself regarding these things in China. Of course, one must bear in mind that I just popped over to China and was already there to do demos, meet the owner/s, talk in person to other members of staff, as opposed to flying over to Korea where one never knows for sure if the school/owner/principal is good until it is usually too late.
The 'Working For Koreans' horror stories I heard were pretty much the same as what you'd read on Dave's, mainly about shoddy management/bosses. That said, those stories were few and far between as I didn't meet all that many foreigners working for Koreans in China, those jobs are hard to get and desirable due to the good pay and being able to teach other subjects besides English. |

| I see signs for them on the Seoul subway all the time. They advertise branches all over Seoul and Gyeonggi, so they must be a fairly big company. Unfortunately, I really can't tell you any more than that. |

| I got an email from them that says it's better to go there and then they will help with the visa later. That's usually risky... |

Well I turned it down.
It was a reasonable position after researching, but they wanted a decision today. I can't change my whole life that quickly. |
