I was really not impressed. Other years have been better, IMO.
Perhaps it was just the seminars I happened to attend, but the quality seemed much lower this year.
It also seemed like there were a LOT of sponsored workshops on Saturday morning. I went to 4 different rooms before I found one that wasn't trying to sell me something that I don't need.
Definitely felt like the cost of admission was way overpriced. Other years I've felt like I learned a lot more.
Not sure what happened. I was disappointed. |

This was my first KOTESOL, and I loved it. Krashen is pretty dogmatic, but he was a cool dude. I thought he was funny has heck. I'm been thinking about doing ER in my classroom next semester, and now I know I will. I also liked Kumaravadivelu's workshop. I will make a much greater effort to include a deeper and more critical look at various cultures in my classroom. I think the Korean context is a great place to do this, many students are quite interested in other cultures as compared to their own. I like Farrell, and I will focus a lot more on my reflective practice.
I stuck mostly to "big name" workshops, and I enjoyed them. I would have like to have seen more of Folse, but I didn't. I also walked across the street to the japanese resturant and had a good noodle dish for around 6500. |

I think every year has some good and bad. I try to sit by the door just in case the presentation / presenter isn't what I'm looking for. A couple of people walked out of my presentation... no biggie. I hoped they found something that helped them. |

Overall, really good conference.
Registration was a breeze. Ate lunch outside. I liked the pace of the presentations and breaks. Speakers were quite good except for one snooze-fest. Rooms easy to find. Maps posted helped to navigate between buildings.
The regular sessions were generally okay. Unfortunately, most were watered down survey presentations and oriented to teachers with not much experience. Yes there were a few for that focused on one specific topic in depth, but not enough of them. No research workshops and few research reports.
Worth the money and time. |

I was interested primarily in speaking and writing presentations and on Saturday, it seemed that they scheduled most of the writing presentations at the same time (1:30pm). Being that I couldn't be in five places at the same time, I had to choose one and I couldn't see the other presentations at a later time. Sort of disappointed.
It would be nice if KOTESOL video taped all the presentations and offered them to members on the website. |
I looked into this hossenfeffer and the academic presentations focusing on writing were spread over different time slots; the commercial spots were all at the same time (as you noticed).
Check out kotesol.org for some recorded speaker interviews (if it's working!), and I'm told there should be videos of selected presentations up on the site in a week or so.
Seon-bee. The 101 stream of presentations (oriented to new teachers) was a response to attendee comments that there aren't enough hands-on workshops at conference that give new teachers something useful to take back to work on Monday. It just goes to show that you can't please everybody all the time. I'm glad your overall expereince was a good one, though! |
