most places are over charging .. it seems to be a new trend worldwide.
from rents, to the products sold in the stores.
expect the prices to keep rising.
wont be long when bars in Itaewon will be charging over 10.000won a drink
and guess what!??
people will pay it...
most bars now are charging 7-9.000 a drink. expect 10.000 in the next 2-3 years, and then 12000 a gin a tonic by 2018 worldcup!
bowl of pasta or pizza, easily 30K
a kebab 10.000
kimbab 4000
taco will be 15.000won if its not already..
the rich are getting rich... building owners are getting greedy!
and shop owners are over charging. |
That's why they pay for that Itaewon location. They can charge higher prices and someone will pay. |

That place is decent, but I would hardly call it (or its prices) amazing. |
Their prices (Taco Amigo) aren't for decent food, they're for excellent food...which they simply don't have. Combine that with the horrible service and the unpleasant way the white manager talks to his Korean staff (like they're idiots) makes you forget all about their sauces (which are decent, but not all homemade, I think). Not only that, the service there is pretty bad. All these merchants who continue to charge 4,000 won and up for one taco need to be dipped in habenero sauce...head-first.
The whole "overcharge you to hell and back for normally inexpensive food" business model is really long overdue for failure in Itaewon. Taco Bell isn't awesome, but I'm not giving my money to that clown or the greedy thugs at Chili Chili's ("lived in Mexico" but no fresh salsa)...I'd rather eat reasonably priced mediocre Mexican than pay premium prices for average, gringoified Mexican.
I've noticed the Indian places claim to sell this or that dish with chicken, lamb, or beef give you a gravy boat full of sauce...with two three bits of meat for anywhere from 12-17,000 won. I'd love to hear of some place that doesn't. I've found that Wazwan uses more MSG in their meat dishes than they do meat...thus, savory meat dishes with masterful sauces virtually uncontaminated by meat.
Ankara picnic is bloody awesome. There are just too many other kebab places to bother with...I just go there.
Can I also just say that High Street Market and their 10,000 won salt and vinegar chips can go suck pellets outta rabbit's ass? |

It's time to OccupyItaewon. No more 4,000 won tacos and three-piece of meat curries! Down with MSG and low-end garbage! We're taking it back!
Oh wait, you rarely get to get out of the house... |

10k for a meal is the price for excellent food? Hardly. Tago amigo costs, on average, 10-15k for a meal that leaves me stuffed. Granted, I go for the vegetarian options so I pay 10k, but that's hardly overpaying for a burrito with sides. It's often enough for 2 people, anyway.
Did you grow up eating McDonalds, for 15k to be considered such an expenditure?
I usually make Mexican food at home, nowadays, though, so don't go to Taco Amigo often. I usually go to Ankara Picnic for a veggie kebab wrap or Petras for hummus, baba ganoush, and falafel. |

Have to agree with you, but I had to do a double take at the 10,000 won salt and vinegar chips.
Is that the industrial size or multi-pack?
That's insane even for Itaewon. |

Think you meant to say overpriced.
And Taco Amigo is excellent food? Hardly. Perceptions of taste are subjective, except when it comes to PaperTiger, who is the de rigueur expert of all things gastronomical. |

Tastes and what constitutes expensive really is in the eye of the beholder. Keep in mind that a lot of places are overpriced for what they give you, but people also do compare what prices/tastes they are used to back home. Im from the states and LOVE 5 dollar footlongs from subway, i usually got 2 or 3 at a time. Here a regular foot long costs about 6 - 9000 depending on what you get. No dollar menu at Mcds either! sadness lol
however i do feel that 10-15000 is a decent price, expensive prices are from 30 up i would say lol Alas i was curious about trying different places in itaewon, however im still unsure of where to go. i do remember eating at that one restaurant owned by the famous gay korean actor. it was decent food but the service was Horrid lol |

No. I was referring to this:

I don't think that Taco Amigo is excellent, but it is good. The above poster was saying that the price is expensive, and that they should be getting excellent food for that amount. 10k is hardly expensive. A burrito costs the same back home! This isn't a kimbap shop. Dinners don't usually cost 5 bucks when one is eating out. |

10-15,000 won is indeed the price of excellent Mexican food. I'm usually more than satisfied with a $5 Mexican meal. And that would be a real Baja meal. Tortillas, a whole lot of meat, and a little guacamole. 2 or 3 salsas on the side to choose from.
Taco Amigo is just decent. I wouldn't pay more than $2.50 for one of their burritos back home. Rice burritos with a meat garnish are cheap - and they just plain don't taste that good. |

Indian restaurants are ludicrously expensive here for how little meat you get. Thanks for my bowl of sauce, guys. That said, I found a place in Suwon that caters to local factory workers and actually provides good value, lots of meat in their curries and about half the price of most Indian places in Seoul (around 8,000 for a bowl of meaty curry). Probably not very helpful if you live in Seoul, but I'd say the place is actually worth the commute (I was introduced to it by an Indian friend).
High Street Market is expensive for some things, but their meat is actually pretty damn cheap, particularly their ground beef. |

I don't live in Suwon, so my knowledge of landmarks is a bit limited, but:
Cross the pedestrian bridge over the main street in front of the station (it's in front of the mall).
At the other side of the bridge, go down the stairs to your left. The bottom of the stairs will put you on a corner. You want to take a right (walking away from the station, your back will be to the station).
Stay on that road (the right side) for about five minutes. There will be a jewelry store on the corner where a backstreet intersects with the main road at a diagonal angle. Take a right onto said back street. That street splits, and I believe the restaurant is on the split to the right, on the left side of the street on the second floor, pretty close to the corner.
I hope those directions make sense.
I should note that I'm pretty sure this place is actually Nepali, but it's the only Indian restaurant I've found in Korea with reasonable prices and a lot of lentils on the menu. They also sell a really wide range of spices if you want to cook at home. |
