PaperTiger was also specifically referring to their tacos being overpriced. He wasn't referring to your veggie burrito.

| 10k is hardly expensive. A burrito costs the same back home! This isn't a kimbap shop. Dinners don't usually cost 5 bucks when one is eating out. |
Most Korean lunch dishes at a normal restaurant - we're talking the kimchi stews and other assorted soups and various meat & rice dishes, that come with numerous little side dishes - until recently would regularly cost 5,000 won, 6,000 in posh/office areas like Gagnam and Yeouido. And I would deem many of the dishes where I've had lunch to be of a high enough quality to be worth their price. |

I don't think that 3 tacos for 12k is overpriced. My husband has 2, I have 1, and we're well fed.
Also, lunches tend to cost less than dinners. I stand by my opinion that 10-15k for dinner is not extravagant by any stretch. Still, nowadays, a nice lunch goes for 7-8k unless you're at a kimbap shop. |

I've noticed the Indian places claim to sell this or that dish with chicken, lamb, or beef give you a gravy boat full of sauce...with two three bits of meat for anywhere from 12-17,000 won. I'd love to hear of some place that doesn't. I've found that Wazwan uses more MSG in their meat dishes than they do meat...thus, savory meat dishes with masterful sauces virtually uncontaminated by meat.
Ankara picnic is bloody awesome. There are just too many other kebab places to bother with...I just go there.
Can I also just say that High Street Market and their 10,000 won salt and vinegar chips can go suck pellets outta rabbit's ass? |
Indian restaurants are ludicrously expensive here for how little meat you get. Thanks for my bowl of sauce, guys. That said, I found a place in Suwon that caters to local factory workers and actually provides good value, lots of meat in their curries and about half the price of most Indian places in Seoul (around 8,000 for a bowl of meaty curry). Probably not very helpful if you live in Seoul, but I'd say the place is actually worth the commute (I was introduced to it by an Indian friend).
|
How d'ya get there from the station? (I'd be willing to check it out if it delivers as u say it does). |
I don't live in Suwon, so my knowledge of landmarks is a bit limited, but:
Cross the pedestrian bridge over the main street in front of the station (it's in front of the mall).
At the other side of the bridge, go down the stairs to your left. The bottom of the stairs will put you on a corner. You want to take a right (walking away from the station, your back will be to the station).
Stay on that road (the right side) for about five minutes. There will be a jewelry store on the corner where a backstreet intersects with the main road at a diagonal angle. Take a right onto said back street. That street splits, and I believe the restaurant is on the split to the right, on the left side of the street on the second floor, pretty close to the corner.
I hope those directions make sense.
I should note that I'm pretty sure this place is actually Nepali, but it's the only Indian restaurant I've found in Korea with reasonable prices and a lot of lentils on the menu. They also sell a really wide range of spices if you want to cook at home. |
Thnx for that, man |

Well I do. We'll just have to agree to disagree, I'm afraid.

I figured that would be your response.
Pretty much every single single Western-style place in Itaewon charges at least 1000 to 2000 won more than I find acceptable to pay for an item, be it lunch, dinner, breakfast, whatever.
Case in point, the bahn mi sandwiches from the little Vietnamese joint at the corner going up to the Gyeongnidan area, Le Saigon. They used to charge 6000 for a sandwich and I would get it fairly regularly - it being only about 1000 won more than I felt was justified - but after they bumped it up to 7000 and I got a few poorly made ones, it's not quite so high on my "I'll get that for dinner" list.
Korean dinners yes will run a minimum of 10000. I'll gladly drop 50000 for two on the right kind of dinner (I do this a little too much right now ) but I do expect it to be something I enjoy eating.
It all boils down to perceived value versus expense. We can run around in circles for pages and pages but neither of us will convince the other to change their opinion.
Mine is that Taco Amigo isn't worth the money, and the bad/weird service doesn't help matters.
P.S. - What's with the fixation on kimbap shops? I never mentioned them and only go to them when they do a good skillet bulgogi & rice dish or when I want something cheap and nasty like instant nengmyun. |

| I think part of the reason things often seem a bit expensive to us is that in our heads we tend to do a 1,000 won=$1 comparison, which isn't the case. |

Fair enough. Expensive is relative. I'm not loaded, but, as I cook at home a good 90% of my meals, we have "going out for food" money in our budget. Now, going to the Grand Hyatt is expensive!
I'm not saying that Taco Amigo is amazing fare. It's good when I'm out and don't feel like Petra or any of the other places I listed on that favorites thread. The husband and I will either split a burrito and salad or side, or a 3-taco meal. It really isn't much, considering. Usually, I just make my own Mexican at home, though, as it's far superior. Still, occasionally I crave guacamole when I don't have any ripe avocados at home.
As for kimbap shops, those are the only places where I see 5k meals. I was using them as a reference. Most restaurants in my area (by no means a posh area) cost at least 8k for a meal. |

Yes, they do. Do you turn before or after the gas station? |

Now that I can most definitely agree on!

Um, wrong way. It's in the Noksapyeong direction. |

The gas station is about 3 blocks from Suwon Station walking straight from the bottom of that pedestrian bridge from AK Plaza in the station. It's across the street from the KTG Building. |

They are sort of in between both sizes. I usually get one soft taco, and the dude gets 2 hard tacos. We get a side of something or other for a few thousand won. The two of us eat well for under $20, if you count his beer. Of course, neither of eat gut-busting servings regularly, but rather eat until we are full. This might be why so many others complain.
Still, cooking at home is always best, though one may not always have the ingredients on hand. |

dude, it's mexican food, not fucking tapas.
on pizza and beer night, i bet you guys are a real riot too.
Dos Tacos sells typical adobada "mini" tacos..I think they're like 3500 each. and yeah, you'd need 4-5 to get full. they're OK, but that's a ripoff, especially considering pork is fairly cheap in korea. |
