Quote:
Police in Incheon struggled to end a bloody battle between two gangs at a hospital on Friday after members got into a verbal tussle that later escalated into violence.

The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency said yesterday that a Ganseok member had a verbal argument with a member of rival gang, Crown, at around 11:50 p.m. in front of Gacheon University Gil Hospital in southeastern Incheon.

Soon, 100 Ganseok members and 30 Crown members arrived, leading worried bystanders to call police.

About 70 police officers arrived at the tense scene but were unable to disperse the gang members and kept watch for two hours, witnesses told media.

The Ganseok members had been at the hospital to pay their respects at the mourning altar for their leaders wife, a police official told the JoongAng Ilbo yesterday. We couldnt arrest gang members at the beginning because they were just gathering without committing any crimes.

Violence broke out when the Crown member suddenly stabbed the Ganseok member, with whom he had the verbal argument, in the shoulder and thigh. Police immediately arrested the attacker on the spot for attempted murder and managed to disperse the gathered gang members.

The gang member suddenly used his weapon so we couldnt block him, the police official said.

Sounds like something out of a Korean mafia movie. Possibly one of the more comic ones.

With all the cops I see in the Gwanghwamun area on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you'd think IPD could muster up a few more than 70 for 130 rowdy youth

There would be tasers and some serious baton beatings if this was in the states. Do cops here just have no authority to taser someone? Or are they just too afraid of gangsters?

Nah they're just too afraid to work at their job. Easiest way to collect a paycheck.

I can relate to that. In the past when I tried to use my weapon, some Korean guy would try to block me. Looks like the trick is to use your weapon suddenly, and then you can't be blocked.

Not really. They could have tried to arrest the two gangbangers at the center of it and charged them with some piddly misdemeanor that would have seen them out of jail in a few weeks. But, by waiting, the cops ensured that the two are out indefinitely (attempted murder sentence for one and lengthy healing process for the other).

I made friends with a local policeman who studied in the US. One day I commented on how dangerous a certain street was with people driving so fast. He replied, "yes, we stop them to give them a ticket but they yell at us , so we let them go." Laughing

It seems that posters are taking a very light hearted attitude to a serious matter.
