His school was in a decent location for me and he had a beautiful 4 story building full of students. I could feel my spirits lift with every little smile. The kids were so excited to meet me...and then I got a look at the contract.
There was no mention of insurance or pension payments and not only did I bring up the subject, but I got a knowlegable Korean on the phone (an attorney friend from church.) This guy did not even want to listen and he kept insisting that he did not have to comply with the law...and so I walked out. |

As far as I know, not providing insurance or pension is standard operating procedure whether or not its in the contract. This has been going on ever since the collapse of the US economy and the flood of applicants that followed.
Don't worry though, 20 more lemmings from the US will jump at a chance to work there.
Don't get me wrong I commend you. If everybody did this we wouldn't have to settle for jobs without benefits at 2.0 million won.
But the sad fact is there are just too many legally retarded US applicants who will take 1.9 million won jobs with no benefits.
Thus polluting the market for all of us. |

Being from the US I can't speak to the situation in other countries with any credibility. Maybe they are just as desperate as us. I hope not for their sake.
The US is flooded with newly minted graduates who's only employment are bottom tier retail and fast food. Thanks in part to useless degrees from for profit colleges and easy student loans.
I hate to be so bitter, but having gone to a public university and studied Mathematics I have little patience for schools handing out Masters degrees in restaurant management for anybody stupid enough to take out 30K in student loans and pay full sticker.
For profit universities need to be buried and forgotten about until the end of time. |

True but it was easier to recover by finding a good hogwan that would pay those things. Now, it's not as quick to recover because there's more lemmings. Let's pray for speedy economic recovery. If things are still like this a year from now, the incumbent will be in big trouble. |

Actually it was more prevalent back then. Pension/medical insurance were virtually unheard of. If you find the original contracts thread and look at the early ones...you'll see very few mention those, whereas today's about half do. It's improved considerably from 2000. Plus the labor board is now much more aggressive. |

Except hardly any hakwon (that I or my friends knew of) paid those things. Mine didn't nor did of the dozens of other teachers I spoke to in Seoul, Busan and Daejeon when I first arrived. And my experience mirrors that of quite a few old-timers as well.
Heck...severance pay was thought to be a myth back then as well by most |

Just curious
Is the 50% insurance a perk provided by the employer or is it in Korean law that they must provide 50%? It is the case that all E-2 visa holders have to have some sort of govt insurance? Ive only worked in jobs where it was in the contract that they would pay 50% of the insurance so Im not sure about the ins and outs of it. |

Gotta agree with riker on the whole uni thing.
Why do a ba in hospitality, followed by an ma in hotel management or whatever when if you worked for a hotel starting in an entry level position - you would be earning a full time salary for four years and would likely be tracked into a management trainee position should your employer see you have the aptitude and you show the desire. Then in 4 years that it took to get the degrees, you'd have that managerial post plus no debt, plus a car and some money in the bank.
I've worked in hotels when I was much younger and eager beginers with merely a post high school certificate in catering or something, or merely eager staff with a desire to be in the profession were put on management fast track schemes at the drop of a hat. |

It is Korean law that all employees must be covered...even if you are registered as an IC (in which case you pay for it yourself). But if you are an employee then you are co-covered. |
