Another option is to do what I did with my Galaxy S (when I thought I was leaving and might not be back) and get a friend / Dave's guy to take over your contract. That way, you help out someone who might not otherwise get to have a phone (no ARC, etc.) and you get to upgrade for "free." Or leave the country. Whatever.

Thanks for the advice and it's definitely something to consider in the near future. I'll be here for at least 2 more years so I don't expect to take a big hit on a contract of 3 years, if that's the way I decide to go.

The main problem is getting a phone that is somewhat future-proof and good value for money. As mentioned previously, I have an iPod Touch 4th Generation and it serves most of my needs besides being a phone! I'm aware that most smart phones have a poor battery life and would therefore look to use my touch for the more battery intensive activities.

This again presents a problem, as I should be getting a smartphone to cut down on my electronic devices and make my life simpler!
