Thank you Loza.
Yes, Hanam in Gyeonggi-do.
How are the bus connections to Seoul? Frequent? Good coverage?
Are the black market stores any good? Comparable to anything in Seoul/Itaewon?
It sounds like a good place to ride my bike. |
There are many buses to the subway- at least every 5minutes. There's also one of those orange buses-9301 I think that goes into the Seoul City Hall area/Insadong for around 3000won around once an hour. There is a regular bus that goes to Jamsil then onto Gangnam (aprox 1 hour to Gangnam).
Definitely good for bike riders-long ride by the river. There's also the 1988 Olympic rowing pool there, which is a nice place to ride, walk and laze around on the large lawns.
There were two decent BM stores in 2009 when I was last there- not as good as the Hanam market in Itaewon -but more selection than the 'red door' (Is that still in Itaewon?). Lots of dried goods-snacks, spreads, condiments, some cheeses, shampoos etc...
Hanam is a really nice area in my opinion, it helps if you'll be there with your partner as it can be hard to meet twenty something Koreans as it's mostly families and kids there. |

Can anyone give more explicit directions to these foreigner shops in Hanam City? I've been in Korea for years but am a newbie to Hanam. |

I haven't been in Hanam since 2008 but back then you would walk to the Animation high school near the mountain. If you're just outside the high school turn right go down a wee side street. THere are some furniture shops, restaurants etc...walk about 3 minutes, it's on your left. There is a church just past there, so if u see church you've gone just too far. Across from the shop with foreign stuff is a really good restaurant. They used to make savoury donuts and that really tasty wild sesame tofu stew. Their do-tori-mok is great too.
The other shop, turn left at high school and walk about five minutes, it's on your right-but it was smaller and pricier there. hope they are still there! |

| I had the pleasure of visiting Hanam and the mountain next to the Animation high school. It sure did seem like a cleaner place than Ilsan and less uppity than Bundang. |

Hanam's a nice little city. It's definitely not a small town and it has things like E-mart and Homeplus with many little restaurants.
While Hanam is very close to Seoul on the map, taking the bus to Jamsil is a pain. I'll say that a previous poster's 30 minutes is a bit inaccurate. From Hanam city hall, it takes 45 mins on the bus to Jamsil and that's being optimistic. Getting to Gangnam will take over an hour since traffic in Seoul is terrible. Once you get into Seoul, traffic pretty much stops. With Jamsil being out of the way from the places I typically go in Seoul, that was the sucky part for me. Though it takes only 15 mins to the subway in a taxi. I'm sure things will change when they finally open that new subway line. The buses run very frequently. You won't be waiting more than 5 minutes.
For comparison's sake, I live probably twice the distance from Seoul on the map, but I'm on a convenient subway line, and I get to the places I want in Seoul a bit faster. |
