Seoul dance clubs once frequented by U.S. military now bar admission to American soldiers after concern expressed by female patrons, according to local press reports here. South Korea also created a task force to seek revisions to the Status of Forces Agreement, or SOFA, that governs the legal status of U.S. troops in South Korea and elsewhere.

As if this is a sudden development...

The US, unfortunately, has too many soldiers raping women. I am not saying that applies to the majority, but 1/3rd of US service women supposedly get raped, and there are allegations that not enough is being done to stop them. Personally, I think, though I am liberal, certain liberal capitalist forces in the media connected with some business interests have horribly damaged many young American men's views of women, and many men have lost their respect for women. Where did all the gents go? Also, feminism attacked the idea of being a gentlemen.
Something needs to change.

If 1/3 of military women were raped by military men, I wonder why there are so few incidents of rape amongst the military stationed in Korea? There are between 25k-30k soldiers I think. The number of alleged rapes is very very small given the numbers. Just intersting thats all.

Korean women being uneasy to be around military women has always been that way since I've been here. Its one of those stereotypes that is part of Korea. There seems to be a vilificatioin of American military when they are ever discussed amongst Koreans. So the fear gets perpetuated. Interesting thing is I taught once in a military town and the korean women who worked the bar where the miitary guys hung out preferred the military to the teachers once they got to know both sets. Logically it didn't make sense because at the time the miitary had a curfew and the girls had to leave by a cerain time and had the embarassment of having to be signed in by koreans at the gate. The teachers made more money had their own place. While the military often had shared housing for the privates. Their own bedroom but shared bathroom and kitchen areas. They typically stayed shorter than a year. However, the korean girls at the bar both bartenders and customers preferred them. Intersting.

It's because they don't have AIDS like English teachers. They are also less educated with better benefits.

The type of women who go to bars usually don't want to have a conversation about literature.

I'm from North America, however I reject the popular notion that pounding empty carbs, chain-smoking Camels and cruising the strip are the thing to do.

YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan The former skipper of the destroyer USS Momsen will face a court-martial Friday on charges that he raped and assaulted subordinates, according to a media report.

Cmdr. Jay Wylie will stand trial at Naval Base San Diego on one count of rape, two counts of aggravated sexual assault, two counts of abusive sexual contact, one count of sodomy, two counts of maltreatment, three counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and four counts of violating general orders, according to a Navy Times report attributed to a Navy spokesman.

In April, Wylie was relieved of duty for loss of confidence in his ability to command stemming from allegations of misconduct, Navy officials said at the time.

Yet plenty of conversations about literature (and politics, and religion, etc.) happen while partaking in all of the above.

3.5 years for raping two of your charges. Suppose it pays to be a commander of a ship.

A Navy ship commander pleaded guilty Friday to sexual assault and rape of two female sailors, and a military judge ordered his dismissal and sentenced him to more than three years in prison, The Associated Press reported.

Cmdr. Jay Wylie was given a 10-year term but will serve 42 months as part of a plea agreement, said Sheila Murray, Navy spokeswoman.
