I am about to run out of my supply from home and was wondering if anyone could tell me if Korean pharmacies stock any pills that also help with keeping your skin clear? Most contraceptives make me break out loads so I have been using Dianette for the last 10months or so. My local pharmacies don't really speak English so the more info on names etc the have, the better. Thank you.

Take your pill box into the pharmacy and ask them to match it.

They may not speak English particularly well but they read drug names and brands just fine.

Is it legal to renew a contraceptive pill without a prescription? I'd rather not have to go to the gynecologist for a new prescription every time I need a new set of pills.

Last time I tried to renew my prescription for dinette in the uk they refused because of associated cancer risks after 12 months use. You used to be able to get dianette at pharmacies in Korea before and now I dont seem able to so maybe there is a link.

They are available over the counter without prescription.

I picke up my wife's pills every month on my way home from work. It's simple. They probably even have the brand you want. Just walk in and tell them the name. My wife used Mercilon in Peru and she uses it here. It's actually much cheaper here.

I speak under correction but I think my sister needed a prescription for the Diane. I know usually you don't need one for bcp, but as was mentioned above, the pill you're using does give rise to special health considerations.

It won't be hard to find but maybe consult a doctor the first time you get it here. That's what I did because of my family history of cancer and heart disease.

You can get a Korean brand-my pharmacist here told me they were not as good as the Western ones and more clotting happens with them.

You can get Yaz and Yazmin which is made by Bayer here, but you need a 'cript for them from a doctor. You can go to Dr. Sung in Hannam or Dr. Kim in the International Clinic.

I've been on both here. They will cost you, as they are not covered by national health care.

Some are available over the counter, usually the older and less modern pills.

For women taking more recent types of pill, you will need to go to the muff doctor unfortunately, but it'll take seconds. They will ask you a few hopeless questions and then give you the prescription.

I know you are an 'expert' on Korea ttompatz, but you can't know everything, especially not about contraceptive options for women. Perhaps a little more caution and a little less certainty?

First I've heard that you need a prescription for "modern" birth control. When I came to Korea I just looked up the formulation of my pill online and switched to a similar band in Korea. (Marvelon in Canada, Mercilon in Korea.)

It's not a "Korean brand" afaik. The website was all in English.

Well, having spent 2 years in Korea, I was generally unable to get Yasmin from the chemist and needed a prescription. One time I cried and they gave it to me without, but I think this is an exception.

Yasmin is pretty modern and doesn't seem to have come off prescription in China either. It's a massive scam anyway as they don't even check your blood pressure when they prescribe it, if they're not going to check you physically in any way then they might as well hand it out at the chemist, but no, this way they get to make money from you at the gynae too.

Looking at what's in Marvelon it seems pretty generic, Yasmin has Drospirenone in it.

Thanks for all the replies. My doctor at home told me to stop taking Dianette, but agreed to another prescription so I guess maybe it is time to change. So can you just walk in to any doctors (like a family one) to get the prescription? I don't live in Seoul center so I wouldn't ever be able to go to any specialist 'muff' doctors (haha). So Yasmin is available, but u gotta get a prescription? Are doctors open at weekends?

From experience with the Mrs. B/C... take in your box and ask them to match it. Almost without exception (none in our personal experience), they will without the need to visit a Dr. for a new script.

Yes, I thought you could do that too, I read it on these forums, maybe even from you. However it didn't work, not at any chemist in my town, and I ended up having to make an emergency bus journey to the nearest big town to find a gynecologist.

Also in Busan, a big city, try and get a Drospireone containing pill at the chemist and it wont fly.

Pills containing Drospirenone are not available over the counter. If you take Yaz, Yasmin or Yasminelle then you will need to see a gynecologist.

I think it's better to avoid generalization with these things, not everyone is in a big city where if they run out of their medication and need some more it's no big deal to get it. Some people will need to plan, therefore I think it's unreasonable to let them think that all contraceptive pills are freely available over the counter.
