| You rock, ironclad80. I was looking at jobs on Dave's and Craigslist this afternoon and saw a bunch of male only positions. A bunch. I agree with you that it's all about timing and luck. The stereotypes were bad enough and pretty foolish, but the mysogynist rants were reaching a proportion of vitriole and ignorance that was demeaning to everyone, not just women. Your perspective and experience are vewy wefweshing! |

You saw more male only positions than female only positions? For some reason, I find that hard to believe. |

If I understand correctly Illysook is not a fresh out of college blonde. I think being in country is the deal breaker these days. It makes sense for schools to hire people in country. Less money, also an opportunity to meet the candidate in person and reduce the risk. |

What kind of job is it -- that's the kicker...
Are we talking about some kind of 9-6 kindie, a 2-10pm afternoon hogwon, or an adult hogwon with the grueling split shift of early mornings and late nights? Or is it some sweet after school program from 12-6pm or some sweet afternoon hogwon from 2-8pm?
Lots of noobs brag about getting jobs in a day or a week of searching with just a few recruiters, but then it turns out they're working for LCI Kid's Club or Wonderland in Gyeonggi-do, or some EPIK position in Daegu.
Not looking to insight any violence, but may I ask the details of the job you just nabbed? |

I agree with the spirit of what you are saying. But I check Craigslist every day, for the past 3 days there is only 1 job that asks for males: http://seoul.craigslist.co.kr/edu/2671053539.html.
We can't beat the doom mongers and the misogynists by exaggerating like they do. |

for my most recent job i just my resume to my recruiter and he gave me a bunch of jobs that said (Male preferred or Male only). yes, there is a higher proportion of jobs that say Female Only/Preferred but there are schools that ONLY want guys.
they're out there...
and the over 30 thing? not necessarily true either. at my last hagwon there was a 45 year old guy, a 32 year old guy, a 31 year old like myself and a guy who just turned 30.
looks? one guy was morbidly obese and bald.
don't read into the stereotypes too much... |

my last hagwon used to try to make the foreign staff 50/50 but found the students actually like guys better and they only hire men now i hear.
my current public school job would only me hire if i was a guy. my boss insists the kids are more curious about western guys than girls. i also had another PS job interview that only wanted a male teacher. |
Yah, personal ancedotes and hearsay rock!
you can't ignore actual evidence that there are practically no male only ads to be seen and lot, lots of female only ads to be seen. Couple that with the experience of those like A.Kirby and others who are slightly older males and have been job searching fruitlessly for months and we have to come to the opinion that it indeed does not rock at all. Ok they may be out of country and they may bot want a 2pm - 10pm 8 classes or 9am-7pm kind of job, but still - their experiences are REAL and prove that the market is currently tougher than it ever has been.
But yeah, being in country helps. And again, if you are MALE and over 30-odd it really is tough getting Seoul offers (that aren't lci kids club, ecc, or test prep mills with horrendous 6 hr middle schooler shifts etc.) I had 3 offers for Seoul in the last 3 months, one was at a chain hakwan with terrible reviews on the net, one was 6 hr long classes a day with 5 min breaks, lower salary than what I was getting already and a 9.30am - 6.30pm kindy / ele gig.
That said, it is luck too. I'm over 30, male have been here over 5yrs and never held on to a job for over a year and just landed an awesome position (so far) in the best city in Korea with great conditions too. I honestly put it down to being in-country and also that I am good at interviews (drama major.)
Oh and - go to a studio (only 6k at emarts photo studios) and get a professional head and shoulders photo dressed in business attire and looking cheery yet conservative.
I upgraded my photo from one of me in class (thought naively that an on-the-job pic was best) with a crumpled white shirt (kindy kids had been climbing all over me) to a head and shoulders one one of me from a studio wearing a nice shirt and blazer and the offers started getting better.... My recruier even commented me on the photo and thanked me for changing it! |

just out of curiosity, why did you jump jobs every year?
looking for change couldn't find one you liked?
my first job here sucked you know what and my new job is fantastic.
but i still might be crazy enough to jump ship after this year and finally
work in japan like i had always dreamt. |

| hours are 10:20 a.m til 7:20 p.m. Pay is 2.3 plus housing. So it's nothing really special but when I met the people there, I felt like I would fit in well and be treated alright. Pension and insurance are written into the contract. Those things are worth something. |

9 hr shift. Korea really is becoming the worst deal in Asia re hours and teaching hrs.

| There's an hour for lunch and some prep time, so it's not that bad. |

Oh, I wasn't trying to slag off your job and I know that it doesn't have to be the most important factor.
Sorry if that was a bit tactless.
My job is 7.5 hours of being there per day but I actually often try to stay 30 mins to and hr longer on some days to get my prep really sollid, or I take the work home!
I guess Korea still offers the best all round package for entry level jobs, just was pointing out that conditions seem to be declining somewhat as this is the first yr I've ever seen shifts longer than 8 hrs advertised and even plenty of 10hrs, ie the 9.30am - 7.30pm kindy / ele hakwans that are advertising. |

Great job. Hopefully it work out for you. Finding a job and interview is not fun.

That's right. I was fired one week ago and I've already got a new job...and some say things like "you can't get a job in Seoul if you are over the age of 35" and that it's "an employer's market."
So for those of you who are still searching, be encouraged. I now have a better schedule and paycheck! |

| Unfortunately, it didn't work out. I got into an arguement with someone on the very first day and managed to get myself fired. It was largely my fault but I'm not sorry. Evidently, they had a habit of not listening to their NETs. There was no heat or hot water in my apartment when I moved in and they asked the teacher who was leaving why she didn't tell them about this and she said that she'd tried to several times. |
