|
|
I have a specific time I would like to take the time to learn, but I wasn't too sure what I should be paying.
What is the going rate for Korean lessons(by the hour)?
Also, anybody have any suggestions/sites I could check.
Thanks! |

I took classes at the YMCA years ago, they may still offer such services. Universities have K-classes and lots of tutor adds.
The rate depends on what you want in terms of lessons (no of hours per week, type of service (language exchange, actual lessons)).
You just need to contact a few tutors, get their rates and in that way get an idea of the market. |

How picky are you?
Will you be happy with anyone who speaks Korean? That will be cheap and easy.
Are you looking for someone with credentials and/or experience teaching Korean to foreigners? That will not be as easy and may be more expensive. |

Just get on a dating site and find a Korean girl who wants a friend to learn English from. You might even get perks |

The going rate is 30,000 won per hour... which is sadly/amazingly more than many/most Americans make teaching English (the world's lingua franca). |

Different service, different market but if you mean the rate for PRIVATE ENGLISH lessons, then you are way off the mark as those are well above that 30 000W per hour but thanks for playing WT. How is your missionary work in North Korea going?
OP: by all means visit Uni campuses and look for adds, or go online to find some adds. Better yet, talk to your Korean co-workers as they certainly can help you out in that department.
Good luck! |

One teacher told me should would charge 30,000 won an hour for lessons. It's not bad, really. If you can get someone who would take 20 or 25,000 won that might be ideal. It depends on what you can afford. Finding a quality teacher is the most important thing, IMHO. |

No, don't do that. I've tried language exchanges in several different countries and they never work. If you're a beginner you need someone who will spend a lot of time doing really boring repetitive stuff with you over and over again in order to build up your ability and confidence in Korean. Even if you meet a hot Korean chick who's really into you, she probably won't be prepared to do this for you. You'll have to pay someone who knows what they're doing to go though the whole process laboriously. |

A lot of thruth to this!
I would say a language exchange partner is better when you reach conversation level. |

Yes, you should be at the intermediate level when it comes to Korean if you want to really benefit from a conversation partner.
Many people say the best way to learn is by the pillow. That can be true if you are really willing to learn Korean, and she is enthusiastic about helping you.
If you're paying someone, money is a good motivator. Make sure you tell her what you want. Get her to review with you constantly, if he/she is going too fast, slow the person down. They don't know how hard it is for you. Keep working and refining your skills.
We're behind you all the way. Learning Korean will make your life easier. |

But except for that minority of native English teachers married to a Korean or Korean themselves, it is illegal to teach privates. So unless people want to sacrifice their peace of mind and risk deportation and a big fine, they make less money teaching English, a language infinitely more useful than Korean, than Koreans make teaching Korean to Westerners.
0 won per hour < 30,000 won per hour [the privates market referenced above]
Perhaps you weren't aware of this (since you haven't lived or worked in Korea for years) but the market is changing. It is nowhere near as easy for Westerners to make money in the privates market as it once was. The amounts foreigners are charging is going down as well.

Thanks WT but once again what you quoted takes AWAY from your point rather than support it! Crap did you even read and understand that Korean text you just posted????
I am not IN Korea now but I have lots of friends there still and many of them on F-visas do teach private lessons legally. For them, the average rate is well above 30 000W per hour.
Perhaps its dipped below that for E2s but in an illegal market these things can happen.
The maket was bound to get more competitive but also word gets around and rates can be affected as parents figure out that they may have been overpaying for these "lessons". |

Actually, aside from that, you had an interesting response, and I am wondering: what is the going rate is F-visa holders? Has it dropped some for them too? At well over 30,000 won per hour, that is good money IMO. |
