Hi everyone,
I'm taking my cat with me when I move to SK in December. I'm planning on hiring a pet mover, but they cost around $3000!!!! The problem is the requirements change Dec 1 and I won't be coming until Dec 5. I just found out last week that he needs a microchip and a rabies neutralizing antibody (or something along those lines) that he received three months ago! I don't have anyone to leave him with here in the US, so I want to send him early. Does anyone have any recommendations for a pet mover or any other ideas? Thanks!!!

Christie

3 Grand for a freakin' cat? Jesus, I only brought 2 grand with me to make it in the first month before I got paid. What a waste. You do know they catch cats and use their guts to sell to Japanese string/chord makers for musical instruments, right? Not trying to scare you, but just be aware. Razz Razz Razz

that didnt really help answer my question. he's an indoor cat and always has been. keep in mind that people's pets are like family, especially when they live alone. then reexamine your response.

I brought my cat over with me in June, and the airline allowed me to keep her in a cage under the seat in front of me. As far as I know, the microchip is not required until December 31, and it can be done here. All I needed coming from Canada was the required immunization forms signed by the vet, and they did a quick little check on her at Incheon. It cost me around $300 total for the vet visit and the flight.

Hi Daniel,
According to this site ( http://www.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/GK/GK_EN_2_1_4.jsp ) and the pet movers, the law changes Dec 1. That's really too bad because 300 sounds SOOOO much better!!!

Search around for someone who is coming over to Korea in a few weeks that lives in your area. Offer them a few hundred bucks to take your cat over and take care of it for 3-4 weeks until you arrive.

OR

Book your ticket early, come over as a tourist for a few weeks and just couch surf around for a few weeks until your job starts.

Rolling Eyes Let me be the first to say it. LEAVE YOUR CAT AT HOME.

A flight to KOrea will undoubtedly be stressful on the cat.

Stop being so selfish and leave it with someone who will lood after it.

And as for being attached to a cat. Welll that's just weird.

Actually, I'm trying to consider his best interests based on his breed. Here is a common bit of information about his particular breed. It would be harder on him to be separated. I've talked to my vet about this as well as many other people.

"Russian blues are generally shy and tend to form intense attachments to one person."

I also have a Russian Blue and I will be taking her with me when I leave Korea, whenever that is :p

As for the OP, as I mentioned above, your only two options other than quarantine are to come over early with the cat and find a cheep place to stay for a few weeks before your contract, or pay another person who is coming over earlier than you to take your cat and watch it for a few weeks.

My cat had her last rabies shot one week before we left for Korea. She'd had one in Korea six months before that, but when I took her for her pre-flight check up and USDA certificate, they could only give her the certificate with proof of a USDA certified vaccine. I didn't have that, so she was re-vaccinated. Because of this, I was afraid that she would be quarantined for 3 weeks, but they waved her on through. Chances are good that if she's microchipped and has that USDA certificate, she will be okay.

How do I get a USDA certificate? The only one I knew about was the health certificate dated w/in ten days of departure.

The USDA certificate is the health certificate. You have to get it within 10 days of departure. The tricky thing is to make sure that your vet is able to dp the certification. I went to the vet clinic at a large university near me and they had someone on staff. Your local humane society can probably tell you where to go.
