NPR displays photos

Quote:
Every year, 73 million sharks are killed for their fins. Most go to make shark fin soup, a luxury dish and status symbol in some Asian cultures that can sell for $100 a bowl.

In recent years, graphic undercover footage of the shark finning trade has helped raise public awareness of the issue. Photos and videos usually show grim images of fishermen hauling sharks up the sides of boats, slicing off the animals' fins, then letting them slide back into the ocean and certain death. Photographer Shawn Heinrichs and partner Paul Hilton take a different approach.

I had the soup at Bangkok's Chinatown.

Tasteless goo.

Didn't give me any stamina that I was aware of either.

Give me a Lotteria big beef set over that any day.

It seems horrible to cut a shark's fin off and then toss the shark into the sea. It would be one thing if they eat most of the shark. No one should eat the stuff, I think. I support this.

Me too. I sometimes wonder if the Chinese won't be satisfied until they have killed every last living thing on earth. I noticed a growth in the sale of ivory in Africa also, to guess who?

The weird thing is shark meat is delicious and is eaten in Asia. Why not sell the whole shark instead of throwing the rest of it back in the sea?

That's the bit that really baffles me.

It's more cost effective to load your boat up with pricey fins.

Time and effort to process the whole shark just isn't worth it in their eyes.

This is even worse than the seal hunt.

I might be less offended by if it it tasted like anything. As is, shark fin is used as a thickener, which doesn't make the soup thick enough, so they have to add starch to thicken it anyway. Yes, World Traveler is right, it's essentially tasteless goo.

I agree with everything that has been said. Shark fin is tasteless. It is wasteful. And Chinese consumers who pay top dollar for it are extravagent idiots in the way that Western caviar eaters are.

Wouldn't the discarded shark carcass be food for all the other life in the ocean?

This. The sturgeon situation is bad enough that even if I could afford caviar, I probably wouldn't eat it at this point (in the same way I avoid swordfish and blue fin), but caviar is certifiably awesome.
