Not attacking anybody but have to concur that the North American obsession with fast food chains is equally ridiculous and fascinating. I love hearing them talking about it, but I love hearing people talk about anything with such passion. If it was French or Italian food i could maybe understand more. Its interesting tho as a cultural nuance.
Most of these American chains failed in Europe as well. Wendys, Taco Bell etc etc and our palates have more similarities to Americans than Koreans do. People just like different things and have different states. People in other countries don't like chain stores as much. Its not a big deal. |

Now that cool weather is finally here I'd love it if Wendy's would return to Seoul. Ahhh, the memories of the double cheeseburgers and chili I used to get at the COEX Wendys.......................
Would love to see Kenny Rogers Roasters return, too.
And the chain restaurant that was in front of Sejong University (across from Childrens Grand Park). Can't remember the name of it................... |
Why did Wendy's pull out? I would have thought they'd be really popular. Best burger joint out there and a littel healthier than some of the others (though still unhealthy). |
Wendy's Korea changed its name to Winner's after the 1997 Asian financial crisis because of the stigma attached to foreign brands. It withdrew from Korea shortly after but I don't remember Wendy's Korea being ANYTHING NEAR the parent franchise. |

Interesting story yaya. I do like the stories from the real old hands here.
Is it just me or are the Subway's better here? I swear in the UK they suck and the ones here are much better. Didn't the itaewon one win best store prize or something? I gotta say for the price their Italian sub and the one with 3 meats are a good feed for the price and they never skimp on the dressings and olives, peppers etc and you can get a cookie and coffe for desert for reasonable prices too. Nice little store when all is said and done, I think. |

| Don't think anyone mentioned this, but someone once told me they remembered seeing Round Table Pizza in Seoul. When I heard that, I had a Korean friend scour the internet just to be sure, but they were all closed down. Like seeing a mirage in the desert! (I've since discovered Costco pizza, so not that big of a deal anymore.) |

I thought it was okay. It was more expensive and the portions were smaller, but the taste was about 80% of what it should have been. I ate a lot of Wendy's around the early 90s. There were slim pickings amongst non-Korean foods in those days and beggars can't be choosers. |

| One of the first places I ate in Korea was a Wendy's right in Sinchon. I ate there because it was convenient but I don't remember the food standing out at all. |

Ugh. They are okay in Korea. I have never eaten subway in the UK, but in the US they are usually better than what Korea has to offer. The only ones that would be worse are the ones that they a really high volume of traffic, say on a university, and, for some reason, always seem to have a lower quality control on their meats. |

I've had great food at Subway's Korea and bad, but also in the U.S. Since Subway's is a franchise, it depends on who makes it but I can say Subway's Korea gives little meat. |

I'd love to see a place with customizable salads. This is really popular where I'm from. It's often available as take out, as well. 7-12 bucks and I had something massive and healthy.
I miss being able to get whatever greens I want that day, sliced avocados, random cheese choice, artichoke hearts or corn, choice of dressing out of a dozen or so, etc... There were always options for grilled chicken also. Now, if I want a salad like that, I have to spend a fortune and end up throwing the rest of the ingredients away, unless I want to eat salad for the next 3 meals.
It'd probably do well in the university areas. |

Any kind of American-style diner which gives a good range of honestly-priced breakfasts and lunches in good portions would be a godsend.
All the coffeshop/cafes in my neighborhood charge 12-14,000 for their 'all day brunch' which is of such a small portion and questionable quality that a cafe back home would barely dare to ask $5 for it.
Of course, I could just go to the 분식집 and get a big bowl of something spicy with rice and endless side dishes for 6000 won! |
