I remember that the soldier back in 1992, Kenneth Markle, stuck an umbrella through a Korean prostitute's natural orifice and that the tip was showing in her mouth.

That's fine but why doesn't Korea treat their own citizens with as much disdain regarding rapists?

They are making such a big stink over this but fail to ignore what their own Korean men/citizens are doing and getting away with.

Such double standards.

Korean men (crooked teachers) rape children while in school and don't even serve a day. In fact-he is still teaching at the school! Just watch
Dogani.

Plus, a couple years back, some guy raped a young child and to this day she has to pee and poop in a plastic bag. He got two years!

Korea might learn a thing or two from this as far as how to punish their rapists IMO

The link said the soldier convicted of murder received commutation of his sentence. Also, this bit from the link in the OP kind of glosses over the issue:
Quote:
The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul says much of the public anger over their presence surrounds the question of who has jurisdiction to try them in criminal cases.

The movie about the Itaeweon homicide misrepresenting the provisions of the SOFA didn't do much to help.

You have to rape over 70 people to get arrested in Korea.

I was under the impression that sentences for rapes were increasing across the board in Korea.

The cases you guys are mentioning were part of the impetus for that. Citizens were disgusted by the light sentences.

That was 16 years. In the Uk the average 'life' sentence is about 15 - 20 years.

For real? damn, apparently life sentence should be renamed "long period of a covered room with food and ability to exercise"

To me thats ridiculous. Im american and the prison system is overflowing, and people who do horrible things relax and have taxpayers take care of them...its all BS!

sorry ranting a little there lol

Don't forget, that British man who chopped up his Korean wife and put the parts in a fridge got FIVE years after he claimed she "abused" him.

"He deserves a stern punishment as there were no efforts to compensate the victim or remedy the assault," said the judge.

I'm happy the guy got 10 years. Actually I think he deserves more. However, I'm not ready to say "hats off" to the Korean judicial system. It sounds like one of the reasons he got 10 years was that he didn't offer blood money. It is a strange system that always leaves the door open for people to either walk or get a light sentence.

Oh, yeah, max is such a relaxing place to be! Room and board whether you work or not, all the (gay) sex you want, a rec yard, and TV, although all the real stabbings and violence are much better than any lame show or movie! Plus all the excitement of the guards coming in at any time and turning your cell upside down for any or no reason. Of course, for a nice meditative break, just get thrown in solitary for a month or two. If that is not good enough there is always supermax. There you won't have to deal with anyone else for 23 hours/day. In fact, prison is really so nice and relaxing that those bars and fences are actually there to keep people from getting IN.
