A New Declaration of Independence :The weight of the 1 Percent has become intolerable. How can we take our country back? Here's a fresh draft

It is our belief that many of the problems facing Americans today can be directly connected to the unchecked power and complete unaccountability of the 1 Percent, a group that benefits from every unequal boom of the modern era and escapes each disastrous bust unscathed. The 1 Percent is insulated from the negative effects of its disastrous policies by its paid representatives in government. The elite 1 Percent ensures the slavish loyalty of its political handmaidens by flooding their campaign coffers with money squeezed from the 99 Percent as deposits, fees and interest.

What unites the outraged 99 Percent is that we have all played by the rules, only to learn belatedly that the game was rigged. Having been promised modest rewards for working within the system, by taking on debt or voting the party line, we find ourselves, bluntly, shit out of luck. Let the facts be submitted to a candid world:

[etc., etc. worth reading, then...]

Proposals:
1. Debt Relief
2. A Substantial Jobs Program
3. A Healthcare Public Option
4. Reregulate Wall Street
5. End the Global War on Terror and rein in the defense budget
6. Repeal the Patriot Act
7. Tackle Climate Change
8. Stop locking everyone up for everything and end the drug war
9. Full equality for the queer community
10. Fix the tax system

The OWS movement is beginning to produce results, or at least the first step in getting results. The left has not had an agenda in decades. One is now starting to coalesce. This article mentions three other lists and offers links.

I'm disappointed that a proposal for eliminating/controlling money in politics in general and Congress in particular isn't on the list.

I suggest Dems adopt #1, #2, and #4 to focus on for their '12 campaign.

I think it's ironic that it's illegal to borrow money to invest, but every day banks borrow nine times or more of what they actually own to invest in real estate. More ironic is that, for all of the complaints of moral hazard regarding investment banks, these highly leveraged real estate loans are almost all either subsidized or guaranteed by the government... and people think that's a good thing. So I'm with you on #4 with regard to de-leveraging everything in our economic system, if that's how you see regulation.

Most of the rest was either promised or implied in recent Democrat campaigns. I voted for Obama because he either alluded to or promised: public healthcare, reduced foreign interventionism, repealing the Patriot Act, relaxed drug enforcement, and increasing LGBT rights. Right now it seems like Obama will run on a campaign of "No, I didn't make much progress on any of that... but electing the other guy MUST result in reversing the little progress I did make! Vote for me!"

If Democrats start proposing bills to these effects, or the President simply uses his authority to change them in the case of drug enforcement and the Patriot Act, I'll gladly take them seriously. Until then, call me disillusioned and count my vote for the other guy.

moral hazard

It's probably my Puritan upbringing, but I get whip-lash whenever I read that expression in connection with an economic system based on greed, selfishness, and self-interest.

He didn't do nearly as good of a job as I had hoped he would, but to say that he made no progress on healthcare and LGBT rights isn't really accurate. I can't think of any other modern president who has done more in thoose two fields. Honestly thoose two fields are abstract for me, so he doesn't win any points for it, but if thoose matter to you , than he did a decent to good job on thoose issues. I'm not gay, but respect their rights etc. etc., and I haven't been to a hospital for years, except of course for my visa health checks.
